해설문

국문

장승은 나무나 돌에 사람의 얼굴 모양을 새겨 마을 입구나 길가에 세운 것으로, 마을의 수호신, 사찰이나 지역 간의 경계표, 이정표 등의 역할을 한다.

벽송사 목장승은 원래 몸통이 절반 가량 땅 속에 묻힌 채 사찰 입구에 세워져 있었으나 현재는 장승각 안에 보관 중이다. 왼쪽에 있는 ‘금호장군(禁護將軍:경내에 잡귀의 출입을 통제하는 장군)’은 윗부분이 불에 타 원래의 모습이 상당 부분 소실되었고, 오른쪽은 ‘호법대신(護法大神:불법을 지키는 신)’이다.

제작 연대는 확실치 않으나 전해지는 말에 의하면 대략 일제 강점기 초기에 세웠다고 한다. 목장승으로서는 보기 드물게 시대가 오래되었고 비록 눈, 코, 입이 과장되게 표현되긴 하였으나 순박한 인상을 주며, 무서운 듯하면서도 친근함을 느끼게 하는 수수한 조각 수법이 돋보인다.

Wooden Guardian Posts of Byeoksongsa Temple, Hamyang

Guardian posts are usually made of wood or stone in human shapes and are erected at the entrance of a village or along the street in a belief that they will spiritually protect the village. Sometimes they mark the boundaries between different areas.

This pair of wooden guardian posts is said to have been made in the early 20th century. Originally, the posts were erected at the entrance of Byeoksongsa Temple with half of their bodies buried underground, but they have since been moved inside a protective pavilion within the temple premises.

The left guardian post is a general who wards off evil spirits from entering the temple. The upper part was burnt, so its original appearance has been largely damaged. The right guardian post is a deity who protects the Buddha and his teachings. The two guardian posts have exaggerated features, with large round eyes, noses, and beards, and their expressions are naive, frightening, and humorous all at the same time.

영문 해설 내용

장승은 나무나 돌로 만든 사람 모양의 형상으로, 마을 입구나 길가에 세워졌다. 마을을 수호해준다고 여겨졌으며, 때로는 지역 간의 경계를 나타내기도 하였다.

이 한 쌍의 목장승은 20세기 초에 만들어졌다고 한다. 원래 몸통이 절반 가량 땅속에 묻힌 채 사찰 입구에 세워져 있었으나, 지금은 벽송사 경내로 이전하여 보호각 안에 보관하고 있다.

왼쪽 장승은 사찰 내에 잡귀의 출입을 통제하는 장군이다. 윗부분이 불에 타 원래의 모습이 크게 훼손되었다. 오른쪽 장승은 불법을 지키는 신이다. 두 장승 모두 크고 둥근 눈, 코, 수염 등이 과장되게 표현되어 있지만, 순박한 인상을 주고 있으며, 무서운 듯하면서도 친근함을 느낄 수 있는 익살스러운 모습이다.
