The construction techniques and the excavated archeological artifacts suggest that the fortress was built in the mid-6th century by the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) '''which was undergoing a northward expansion at the time and needed to secure its newly conquered lands along the Hangang River'''*. The fortress underwent a massive reconstruction at the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries.  It is presumed that the fortress stopped functioning as a military facility since/in the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). The records of the Joseon period (1392-1910) sometimes mention the fortress as connected to the Baekje kingdom (18 BCE–660 CE).

The perimeter of the fortress measures 1,665 m which is quite large compared to other fortresses built during the Three Kingdom period (57 BCE-668 CE). Beginning in 1986, several excavations have been conducted in the fortress revealing one bastion site, 11 building sites, two gate sites, three reservoirs, three storage pits, and four buildings sites of ritual** use. The excavated artifacts date to the 6th-8th centuries*** and include earthenware, roof tiles, axes, pitchforks, straw shoes, drums, baskets, spinning tops, and wooden tablets with inscriptions.

총 둘레 1,665m(2018년 하남 이성산성 13차 발굴 보고서)로 삼국시대의 성곽 중에서는 큰 편이다.

Iseongsanseong Fortress, Hanam

Iseongsanseong Fortress was built around the top of Iseongsan Mountain (209.8 m above sea level) and the valley stretching to the south. To its south, the fortress has plains surrounded by taller mountains, and to the north, it commands a nice view of the Hangang River basin. It occupies a strategically advantageous location from which it can protect the plains to its south as well as the Hangang River basin from the potential attacks from the north.

The construction techniques and the excavated archeological artifacts suggest that the fortress was built in the mid-6th century by the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) which was undergoing a northward expansion at the time and needed to secure its newly conquered lands along the Hangang River*. The fortress underwent a massive reconstruction at the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries.
