Chimnakjeong Pavilion

2018

This pavilion was constructed by Kim Gwang-gye (1580-1646). His father, Kim Hae (1555-1593), was a leader of a civilian army during the Japanese invasions (1592-1598). Later, in 1627 and 1636, Kim Gwang-gye himself also raised a civilian army to fight against the Manchu invasions.

The overall layout of this pavilion is close to that of a lecture hall, consisting of a wooden-floored hall at the center and two rooms with under-floor heating at either end. It is said that Kim Gwang-gye used to hold meetings at this building with local scholars who had joined his army.

This pavilion was relocated to the current site in 1974 due to the construction of the Andong Dam. It was originally located in Ocheon-ri, Yean-myeon.

This pavilion was built in 1608 by Kim Gwang-gye (1580-1646). It was originally located elsewhere in Ocheon-ri, but was moved to the current site in 1974 due to the construction of the Andong Dam.

Kim Gwang-gye was the son of Kim Hae (1555-1593), a leader of a civilian army during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. He was the student of the scholar Jeong Gu (1543-1620) and was renowned for his literary abilities even at a young age. During the Manchu invasion of 1637, he raised a civilian army. On his way northward toward the capital, he heard the news that King Injo (r. 1623-1649) had surrendered. He began wailing in grief and dispersed his troops. He spent his remaining years at this pavilion.

This pavilion was used as a venue for lectures or poetry writing gatherings. It consists of a wooden-floored hall at the center and an underfloor-heated room to each side, which is a layout commonly found in study halls. Hanging in the hall is a plaque inscribed with the name Unamjeongsa, meaning “Study Hall of the Cloud Rock,” which is a reference to the pen name of Kim Gwang-gye’s great-grandfather, Kim Yeon (1487-1544).
