Mireuksa Temple Site, Iksan

This is the former site of Mireuksa, which was the largest Buddhist temple of the Baekje kingdom (18 BCE-660 CE). According to the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa), King Mu (r. 600-641) and his queen consort were passing by a pond on their way to Sajasa Temple in Yonghwasan Mountain (today’s Mireuksan Mountain), when a triad featuring Maitreya, the Future Buddha, suddenly arose from the water. At the queen consort’s request, the king ordered that the pond be filled and a temple be established at the pond’s site. It is said the temple had three pagodas, three prayer halls, and corridors.

Since 1974, the temple site was surveyed several times, and the record in the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms has been proven to be true. The remnants of three prayer halls, each with a stone pagoda in front of it, were found arranged east to west. Each set of hall and pagoda were surrounded with long corridors. Excavated artifacts include a decorative roof-end tile, green-glazed tiles with lotus design, the stone base of a stone lantern, and a gilt-bronze wind chime. The unique layout of this temple and the artistic beauty of the artifacts attest to the originality and excellence of Baekje culture.

The remains of underfloor heating facilities, dating to the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods, were also excavated from the building sites.

Among the three pagodas, only the one in the west remained. It is the oldest remaining stone pagoda in Korea. Beginning in 1998, it was dismantled for repair which took more than 20 years. It was opened to the public in 2019. During the repair, sarira reliquaries were found inside the first story, along with various offerings, gold plates bearing inscriptions recording the sarira enshrinement, a silver diadem ornament, and bronze bowls. The east pagoda was newly reconstructed in 1993.

This temple site was designated as Historic Site No. 150 in 1966, and in recognition of its outstanding universal values, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as part of the Baekje Historic Areas. Designated cultural heritages from this site include the west pagoda (National Treasure No. 11), a pair of flagpole supports (Treasure No. 236), a gilt-bronze incense burner (Treasure No. 1753), reliquaries excavated from the west pagoda (Treasure No. 1991), and a pedestal of a stone lantern (Jeollabuk-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 143).
