Stone Boundary Marker of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan

This stone post was erected in the year 1085 to mark the boundary of the lands* owned by Tongdosa Temple. At the time, the temple had a total of 12 boundary markers installed along the boundaries of its domain and at its entrance**. Only two of them remain. The other marker is located about 5.4 km to the north in Sangcheon-ri Village***.

This boundary marker bears an inscription carved on its front side in four vertical lines. According to the inscription, this marker was reinstalled in 1085 by the order of the state’s census department (upon the temple’s request). This suggests that an earlier boundary marker had already stood here prior to the installation of this one****. As a temple boundary marker installed by the government, it provides important clues about the relationships between the Buddhist temples and the state during the Goryeo period (918-1392). Also, the inscription on this boundary marker contains several instances of Idu script, a writing system devised to represent vernacular Korean using Chinese characters, which presents valuable data for the historical linguists and epigraphy research.*

This boundary marker also reflects the folk beliefs based on feng shui principles popular during the Goryeo period (918-1392). According to the records held at Tongdosa Temple, these markers were installed along its boundaries in four cardinal directions and also served as guardian posts reinforcing the temple’s natural to protection calamities.

  • I guess it is better to specify that it’s not simply the boundary of the temple (통도사의 경계), but of their land(farmland etc) which was not a part of the temple per se. And maybe we should add a sentence or two about the temple itself?
  • Guess who found those inscriptions very exciting ;)
