Imyeonjae Head House of the Heunghae Bae Clan, Andong

This is the head house of the family of Bae Sang-ji (1351-1413), who was the first person from the Heunghae Bae Clan to settle in the Andong area. A head house is a residence passed down among the male successors of a family lineage.

This house was established in 1558 by Bae Cheon-seok (1511-1573), the 6th-generation descendant of Bae Sang-ji. Originally, it was located in Domok-ri, Wolgok-myeon, but was moved to the current location in 1973 due to the construction of the Andong Dam. It consists of a main quarters, a detached quarters, and a shrine.

The name Imyeonjae means "Hall Overlooking the Pond" and came from the pen name of Bae Sam-ik (1534-1588), the son of Bae Cheon-seok and a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910). Bae Sam-ik passed the state examination in 1564 and later served as headmaster of the National Confucian Academy and as governor of Hwanghae-do Province. While serving as governor, there was a famine in the region. Even though he was ill, he worked tirelessly to help the region recover from the famine. However, as his illness worsened, he resigned from his post and died on his journey home. Bae Sam-ik was also known for his book collection and excellent calligraphy.

The detached quarters is called Geumyeokdang, meaning “Hall of the Changing Zither.” It comes from pen name of Bae Yong-gil (1556-1609), the son of Bae Sam-ik and a leader of a civilian army during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598.
