Hwagyeongdang is the biggest property in Hahoe Village, which shows the great structure of an upper-class house during Joseon period (1392-1910). This house was made by Ryu Sa-chun (1741~1814) when he began to live separately from the head family living in Chunghyodang, the head house of his seventh-generation ancestor and renown civil official Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607). In 1863, women’s quarters, detached quarters, and shrine were added by Ryu Do-seong (1823~1906), the great grandson of Ryu Sa-chun.

The detached quarters are used as men’s quarters. Viewed from the elevated wooden floor, beautiful scenery of Hahoe Village against the backdrop of Hwasan mountain is presented. The pine tree in the back is more than 300 years old, whose shape looks like the river encircling Hahoe Village. It is thus called “Hahoe Pine.
 
  
This house’s name, “Hwagyeongdang,” which means “House of Harmony and Respect” is originated from the family motto of being harmonious and respectful to show filial piety for parents and loyalty to the king. Hahoe Village is divided into South Village and North Village by the street crossing the central village. Hwagyeongdang is one of the two representative houses along with Yangjindang house in North Village, hence it is also called “bukchondaek,” meaning “North Village house.

기존 국문

조선 정조 21년 1797 에 류사춘이 사랑채, 날개채, 대문채를 짓고, 철종 13년 1862 에 증손 자 석호 류도성1823~1906이 안채와 큰사랑채, 사당을 지었다. 집의 규모가 웅장하고 대갓집의 격식을 완벽하게 갖추어 전형적인 사대부 가옥의 면모를 보여주고 있다. 큰사랑채의 누마루에 앉으면 아름다운 풍광을 한눈에 감상할 수 있다. 300여년의 세월을 품고 서있는 큰사랑채 뒤편의 소나무는 하회마을을 굽어 돌고 있는 강물의 형상을 하고 있어 또 다른 볼거리이다. 화경당은 ‘화和로 어버이를 섬기고, 경敬으로 임금을 섬긴다’는 뜻이다.

수정 국문

화경당 고택은 1797년에 류사춘이 작은사랑채, 날개채, 대문채를 짓고, 1862년에 증손자 류도성이 안채와 큰사랑채, 사당을 지었다.

하회마을은 남촌과 북촌으로 나뉘는데, 이 집은 양진당과 더불어 북촌을 대표하는 건물이다. 집의 규모가 하회마을에서 가장 크고 웅장하다. 사랑채와 안채, 행랑채 및 사당을 갖춘 전형적인 사대부 가옥의 면모를 보여주고 있다. 안채는 사랑채와 이어져 있으며, 한옥에서는 드문 2층 구조이다.

큰사랑채의 누마루에 앉으면 화산을 마주하며 하회의 아름다운 풍광을 한눈에 감상할 수 있다. 큰사랑채 뒤편의 소나무는 300살이 넘었는데, 하회마을을 감싸고 흐르는 강물의 형상을 하고 있어 ‘하회소나무’로 불린다. 또 사당 옆에는 450년이 넘은 탱자나무가 아름답다.

화경당은 ‘어버이를 섬기고, 임금을 공경하라’는 뜻이다. 현판 글씨는 조선 후기 서예가인 한석봉의 글씨를 집자하여 새긴 것이다.

화경당은 집의 규모가 하회마을에서 가장 크고 웅장하다. 류성룡의 7대손인 류사춘(1741~1814)이 1797년 충효당에서 분가하면서 처음 지었고, 류사춘의 증손자인 류도성(1823~1906)이 1862년에 안채와 별당, 사당을 지었다.

이 집의 본채는 사랑채와 날개채, 안채가 ‘ㅁ’자 구조를 이루고 있다. 뒤편의 안채는 안방 위에 다락을 올린 2층 구조이다.

별당으로 지어진 건물은 큰사랑채이다. 이곳의 누마루에 앉으면 화산을 마주하며 하회의 아름다운 풍광을 한눈에 볼 수 있다. 뒤편의 소나무는 300살이 넘었는데, 하회마을을 감싸고 흐르는 강물의 형상을 하고 있어 ‘하회소나무’로 불린다.

이 집의 이름인 화경당은 어버이에 대한 효도는 화목함으로 하고, 임금에 대한 충성은 공경함으로 하라는 이 집안의 가훈에서 유래하였다. 하회마을은 마을 중심의 길을 두고 남촌과 북촌으로 나뉘는데, 이 집은 양진당과 함께 북촌을 대표하는 집으로서 북촌댁이라고 불리기도 한다.
