이 구상나무는 1999년 4월 21일 영국 여왕인 엘리자베스 Ⅱ세가 전통과 문화가 살아 숨 쉬는 안동 하회마을 방문을 기념하기 위하여 심은 것이다.

구상나무는 세계적으로 널리 알려진 한국 고유의 수종(樹種)으로 소나무과에 속하는 상록수이다. 한라산과 지리산 등에 재생하는 한대성 수목(寒帶性인 樹木)인 구상나무의 열매는 원통형으로 하늘을 향하고 있으며, 떨어지는 순간 조각조각 흩어져 자취를 남기지 않는다. 그리고 좋은 향기를 간직하고 있다.

선녀가 하늘에서 내려와 목욕할 때 옷을 걸어 놓는다는 아름다운 전설을 간직하고 있는 구상나무는 힘찬 기상과 추위를 견디는 굳건한 힘을 지니고 있어 우리 민족의 외유내강(外柔內剛)한 모습과 같으며 선녀처럼 아름답고 우아한 모습은 여왕의 품격을 나타내고 있다.

Korean Fir of Hahoe Village, Andong

This Korean fir was planted on April 21, 1999 to commemorate the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom to Hahoe Village in Andong.

Korean fir (Abies koreana Thunb.) is an evergreen coniferous tree in the Pinaceae family. It is native to the higher mountains of South Korea such as Hallasan and Jirisan. Its cylindrical cones grow upward, produce a pleasant scent, and break into many pieces as they fall.

Korean fir is known for being very resilient to cold temperatures and is thought to symbolize the strong spirit of the Korean people. A legend also says that when the heavenly maiden(s) descend(s) from the sky to bathe, she/they put(s) her/their clothes on Korean firs.* The elegance and beauty of this tree make it a representative of the plant kingdom worthy to match the status of a queen.
