Geungnakjeon Hall of Bongjeongsa Temple, Andong

Geungnakjeon is a Buddhist worship hall enshrining a statue of Amitabha, the Buddha of Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.

The exact construction period of this hall is uncertain, but it is presumed to be Korea’s oldest extant wooden building, built around the late 12th to early 13th century. Generally, roofs of traditional Korean wooden buildings were repaired 100 to 200 years after the original construction, and a historical record discovered in this hall says the gable roof of this building was first repaired in 1363. The building was repaired again in 1625 and 1809, taking on the style of the Joseon period. However, during an extensive repair in 1972, the front facade of the building, including the center door and the wooden windows, was renovated in what is believed to be the original Goryeo period style.
