해설문

국문

죽방렴은 지족 해협의 거센 물살을 이용한 전통 어로 방식으로 ‘대나무 어사리’라고도 부른다. 좁은 바다 물목에 참나무 지지대 300여 개를 갯벌에 박고 대나무 발을 조류가 흐르는 방향과 거꾸로 해서 V자로 벌려두어, 물살을 따라 들어온 물고기를 원형의 임통에 가두어 잡는다.

예종 원년(1496년)에 편찬된 『경상도 속찬지리지』 남해현 조에 “방전에서 석수어, 홍어, 문어가 산출된다” 고 적혀 있는데, 방전은 죽방렴을 뜻한다. 죽방렴은 현재 지족 해협에 약 23여 개가 설치되어 있으며 이를 이용해 5월에서 7월 사이에 고기를 잡는다.

지족 해협 죽방렴은 아름다운 지족 해협의 자연 경관과 우리나라 전통 어로 방식을 보여주는 문화 유산으로서의 가치를 인정받아 2010년 명승으로 지정되었다.

This fishing facility uses traditional fishing weirs, called jukbangnyeom in Korean, that are made of oak posts and weaved bamboo to create V-shaped traps in which fish are caught with nets. It is located in Jijok Strait, a narrow body of water separating Namhaedo and Changseondo Islands.

About 23 fishing weirs, consisting of over 300 oak posts, are currently installed in the strait. Fish are caught primarily from May to July and include anchovy, largehead hairtail, halfbeak, flounder, and flathead grey mullet.

In recognition of the natural beauty of the strait and the cultural value of the preservation of a traditional fishing method, this area was designated as a scenic site in 2010.

영문 해설 내용

죽방렴은 이 일대에서 고기를 잡는 데 쓰는 전통 어로 방식을 부르는 말이다. 남해도와 창선도 사이의 좁은 물목에 참나무 기둥 300여 개를 박고, 대나무를 발처럼 엮어 V자형으로 세우고 그물을 쳐 놓는 형태이다. 물살을 따라 안으로 들어오는 고기를 가두어 잡는다.

현재 지족해협에는 약 23개소의 죽방렴이 설치되어 있고, 5월에서 7월 사이에 많은 고기가 잡힌다. 주요 어종으로는 멸치, 갈치, 학꽁치, 도다리, 숭어 등이 있다.

아름다운 지족해협의 자연 경관과 한국의 전통 어로 방식을 보여주는 문화유산으로서의 가치를 인정받아 2010년 명승으로 지정되었다.
