'''Burimun Gate of Geonbongsa Temple'''

 +
Burimun Gate was built in 1920 as the entrance to the precincts of Geonbongsa Temple. Typically, to enter a temple, one must pass through three or four gates, but in Geonbongsa Temple only the Burimun Gate remains. It was the only temple building that survived the Korean War (1950-1953), during which the whole temple was destroyed. The gate consists of four cylindrically shaped stone pillars with four wooden pillars placed on top of them, and a roof.

 +
The name Burimun means “Gate of Nonduality,” indicating that there are no two truths. It symbolizes that only by passing through the gate one can enter the world of truth, that is the land of Buddhism. In temples which have a separate Cheonwangmun Gate, meaning “gate of the Guardian Kings,” the statues of four Guardian kings who protect Buddha’s teachings and the pure land of Buddhim are enshrined inside such gate ''to guard the temple''. In Geonbongsa Temple, a Buddhist ritual scepter used in Buddhist ceremonies was carved on the stone pillars of the Burimun Gate to underline the meaning of protection. A Buddhist ritual scepter was origianally an ancient Indian weapon and as such it symbolizes protecting the Buddha and the wisdom of enlightenment which puts an end to all earthly passions.

Burimun Gate of Geonbongsa Temple was designated in 1984 as Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Material. The plaque hanging on the gate features the writing of a ''well-known'' calligrapher Kim Gyu-jin (1868-1933).
