Hwagyeongdang House

Hwagyeongdang is the largest property in Hahoe Village. It exemplifies the grand structure of an upper-class house built during the Joseon period (1392-1910).

This house was established by Ryu Sa-chun (1741-1814), the 7th-generation descendant of the renowned civil official Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607). Ryu Sa-chun was born in Chunghyodang House, the family lineage's head house, but branched out from the main family and built this house. At first, there were only the gate quarters, men's quarters, and auxiliary quarters. But, in 1863, the women’s quarters, detached quarters, and shrine were added by Ryu Sa-chun's great-grandson, Ryu Do-seong (1823-1906).

The main building of this house features a men’s quarters, auxiliary quarters, and women’s quarters which form a square layout with a courtyard in the center. The women’s quarters features a wooden-floored hall in the center and under-floor heated rooms to either side. Above the room to the left, there is an attic.

Although there is a men's quarters in the main building, the detached quarters is used as the primary men’s quarters. At the front of the detached quarters is an elevated wooden porch, from which the beautiful scenery of Hahoe Village and Hwasan Mountain can be enjoyed. There is a pine tree behind the detached quarters which is more than 300 years old. Its shape is said to look like the river encircling Hahoe Village, so it is therefore called “Hahoe Pine.”

This house’s name means "a house of harmony and respect." It comes from the family motto of enacting filial piety to one's parents through harmony and loyalty to one's king through respect.

Hwagyeongdang, along with Yangjindang House, is one of the two most well-known properties houses in the northern part of Hahoe Village. It is also known by its nickname, Bukchondaek, which means "house of the North Village."
