국문

이곳 남산 동쪽 봉구곡 자락에는 염불사가 있었다고 전해진다. 『삼국유사』에 따르면 피리사(避里寺)라는 절에 신이(神異)한 승려가 있어 항상 아미타불을 염불하였다. 스님의 염불 소리는 서라벌 360방 17만 호에 들리지 않는 곳이 없어 사람들은 스님을 공경하였으며, 스님이 돌아가신 후 피리사를 염불사로 고쳐 불렀다.

두 석탑은 모두 무너진 상태로 있었고, 특히 동탑은 1963년 불국사 역 앞에 도지동 이거사지(移車寺址) 삼층석탑의 1층 지붕돌과 합하여 다시 세워 놓았었다. 국립경주문화재연구소가 2003년과 2008년 두 차례에 걸쳐 염불사지 일대에 대한 발굴조사를 하였으며, 역 앞에 있던 탑을 해체해 와서 2009년 1월 염불사지 동·서 삼층석탑을 복원하였다. 두 탑은 비슷한 규모로 2층 바닥돌에 3층으로 몸돌을 올린 통일신라시대의 전형적인 형태이다.

East and West Three-Story Stone Pagodas of the (Presumed) Yeombulsa Temple Site in Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju

This pair of stone pagodas are typical of pagodas from the Unified Silla period (668-935). The pagodas had long been collapsed and were repaired and reassembled in 2009 and following archaeological surveys of the site from 2003 to 2008. During the repairs, some new stones were used for the parts of the pagodas that could not be found.

The pagodas are similar in design and size. They consist of a square platform, a two-tier base, three body and roof sections, and a decorative top.

In the Silla kingdom, it was common to place a pair of pagodas in front of the main worship hall of a Buddhist temple. The area where these pagodas are located is presumed to be the site of a temple called Yeombulsa, meaning “Temple of Buddhist Prayer.” A story about this name is recorded in the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa), which states that there once lived a mystical Buddhist monk at the temple whose chanting could be heard throughout all of the ancient Silla capital. After his death, the temple was renamed Yeombulsa in his memory.
