Academy Award winning director, Bong Joon-ho, once described the tear gas used on student protesters like himself during his college years, “It was a very traumatic smell. It’s impossible to describe: nauseating, stinging, hot. It’s strange, sometimes I smell it in my dreams. Usually dreams are images, but I sometimes have this sensation of smelling it. It’s really horrible, but I guess that’s the way it would be.” Jung (2019)   Since smell triggers traumatic memories for Bong, it is understandable that smell would also play a role in his movies. In February 2020, Bong attended the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and offered the following insight in a Q&A session, “Cinema is about sound and images but smells aren’t as easy to convey. Whenever we had a scene with smells in it, I talked about it with the actors - how when people watch the film, it will be through watching the actors who smell the smells and the actors who are embarrassed by their smells that the audiences will get it.” Noh. (2020) Bong was referring to his Oscar winning movie, Parasite, (2019) and the importance of smell throughout the film. In this cinematic masterpiece, smell functions as a symbolic reminder of social status, transgression, and an emotional turning point.
