“With my heart singing to the stars, I shall love all things that are dying. And I must walk the road that has been given to me.”

-Yun Dong Ju, November 20, 1941

Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet is a 2016 South Korean black-and-white biographical period film, directed by Lee Joonik about the life of the Korean poet Yoon Dongju. It was released in South Korea on February 17, 2016.

Yoon Dongju lived from December 30, 1917 to February 16, 1945.

Plot

In the Japanese colonial era, young Dongju writes poems about the harsh reality of his life. As Japan’s policies get more serious, writing anything in Korean is prohibited. Just when the slight possibility of publishing his poems seems to have evaporated, a Japanese professor sees Dongju’s talent and suggests that he publishes his poems in English. But before his work is done, Dongju is suspected of anti-Japanese activities. Will Dongju’s dream fail and his poems vanish into thin air?

The movie follows the life story of the Korean poet Yoon Dongju and his imprisonment by the Japanese government for being involved in the Korean independence movement.
