Lee Sang-hae graduated from Seoul National University in 1970 with an architecture degree. After Mr. Lee worked at the architectural offices in Korea for seven years, he left for the United States where he obtained his master’s degree in architectural design and his Ph.D. in architectural history at Cornell University. From 1986 to 2013, he served as a professor of architecture at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul.
Over the years Professor Lee has filled various posts such as president of the Korean Association of Architectural History, president of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) KOREA, and chairperson of the Korean Cultural Heritage Committee. In addition, he has written many books in Korean such as Korean World Cultural Heritage (co-author); 100 Years of Korean Architecture; Jongmyo Royal Shrine; Seowon Academy; History of Korean Architecture (co-author); Feng-shui of Korea (co-author); Palaces and Confucian Architecture in Korea; Hahoe Village; Gyeongju Yangdong Village; Wisdom of Korean Architecture; Dosan Seowon Academy; Haeinsa Temple and books in English such as Dwellings, Settlements and Tradition (co-author); Asia’s Old Dwellings: Tradition, Resilience, and Change (co-author); Seowon: The Architecture of Korea’s Private Academies; Korean Traditional Landscape Architecture (co-author); Korean Villages and Their Cultures (co-author); and Wisdom of the Earth: Korean Architecture (co-author).
Professor Lee Sang-hae has two main research interests: analysis of the characteristics of architectural places and the subject matter of architecture, and the study of Korean architecture in the context of East Asian culture and history.
