(Fran) Maybe for 萬事成, "All affairs will be completed"? Because the 萬 means 'everything' and 成 has the sense of finishing.

Note from Kathy: A creative update to the language for gender-inclusivity (which this text might allow room for) "A green bamboo is the noble one's backbone / a verdant pine, virility's heart"

Note from Kathy: An update to the language for gender-inclusivity (which this text might allow room for) "A green bamboo is the noble one's backbone / a verdant pine, virility's heart" - I think there's a case to be made to do a global find-replace for 君子to be taken as "noble one"

(Kyrie) My question is whether, in translating, it is important to preserve the gendered insinuation of the rhetoric or not. If this is translated as a timeless poem then I think that your suggestions for gender-inclusivity work very well. If, on the other hand, it is being translated as a historical document to exhibit the perspectives of the time in which it was written, then I think that the gendered rhetoric should be preserved.

(Kathy) Thanks Kyrie yes I think that is right! I'm inclined to translate classics in a way that is open to the future, as well - because we never do know how a text might be taken on in the future. So there's a certain audience I have in mind beyond a historical-classical-scholarly set.

- Note from Kathy: how about something like "Life's horizon, a mere cup of wine" to capture the 涯 in 生涯?

Translation

Poem 13 : (Ewa)

If the wife is intelligent, the husband will suffer fewer misfortunes
If the son is filial, the father’s heart will open up.
If the son is filial, both parents will rejoice
If the family is harmonious, a lot will be achieved.

Poem 15 : (Ewa)

A green bamboo is the gentleman’s backbone
A verdant pine tree is the man’s heart.
People change their minds from morning to evening
The appearance of the mountains remains the same throughout the ages.

Poem 16 : (Ewa)

Rivers and mountains host ten thousand pasts
People and things visit for a hundred years.
The matters of this world are but a three-foot zither
The lifetime is merely a cup of wine.
