A Person Related to the Court Banquet in Celebration of King Gojong’s Fiftieth Birthday 》The Five Banquets and the Three Orchestras

Story

There were five banquets in Sinchuk jinyeon: Oejinyeon (外進宴), Nejinyeon (內進宴), Yajinyeon (夜進宴), Igilhoejak (翌日會酌) and Igilyayeon (翌日夜讌).

Oejinyeon (外進宴) is a banquet attended by the emperor and male government officials; Nejinyeon (內進宴) is a banquet attended by the ladies of the royal family and the wives of government officials; Yajinyeon (夜進宴) is a nighttime banquet; Igilhoejak (翌日會酌) is a banquet held the day after an event (the next day's gathering); Igilyayeon (翌日夜讌) is a night banquet on the day after an event.

The procedure of each banquet was accompanied by music, singing and dancing. There were three kinds of bands that played music: Cheonsang-ak (殿上樂), Cheonjeon-ak (殿庭樂) and Naech’ui (內吹). Cheonsang-ak (殿上樂) is the music of the Terrace Ensemble in the palace; Cheonjeon-ak (殿庭樂) is the music of the Courtyard Orchestra in the palace; Naech’ui (內吹) is a form of the Korean traditional Marching Band organized by wind and percussion instruments, was performed through the march of a king or according to military affairs.
