Definition

목조와 익조가 살았던 지역.
함경북도 경흥의 두만강 대안(對岸)에 있었던 러시아 영내의 지명. 이곳은 이성계의 고조인 목조(穆祖)와 관계가 있다. 목조는 본래 덕원에 살았는데, 이곳으로 옮겨와 익조(翼祖) 때까지 살았다. 익조는 여진족이 해치려 하여 적도(赤島)로 피하였다가. 뒤에 다시 덕원으로 옮겨와 살았다. 알동에는 이성계의 조상이 묻힌 2개의 능이 있었는데, 태조 때 경흥 남쪽의 능평(陵坪)으로 이장하였다가 태종 때 함흥으로 이장하였다.
