Definition

향원지로 흘러드는 샘물의 우물 뚜껑 측면에 새겨진 글이다. 고종때 경복궁 중건 당시에 제작된 것으로 추정된다. ‘한강의 진짜 근원’이라는 뜻이다. 한강을 다른 말로 ‘열수(洌水)’라고 하였기 때문에 ‘열상(洌上)’은 한강의 북쪽, 즉 서울이라는 뜻으로 쓰였다. 여기서는 열상을 열수와 동일한 개념으로 사용한 듯하다. 한강의 근원은 지리학적으로는 강원도 태백시에 있는 검룡소이지만, 왕궁에서 흘러나온 물이 한강으로 유입되므로 상징적으로 이 곳을 진원(眞源)이라고 표현한 것이다. 글씨는 예서체로서 돌에 새겨진 금석문이다
