명성황후

명성황후(明成皇后 1851~1895) 조선 26대 고종의 왕비. 본관 여흥. 아버지는 민치록(閔致祿), 어머니는 한창부부인 이씨이다. 1866년(고종 3) 흥선대원군과 부대부인 민씨에 의해 왕비로 간택되었다. 시아버지 흥선대원군과 정치적 입장이 달라 임오군란 때 궁중을 탈출했다가 돌아온 적이 있고 갑신정변이 무위에 그치는데 일조를 했다는 평가가 있다. 19세기 말 내외의 격동 속에서 고종과 함께 국정을 주도하고자 했으나 1895년 일본군에 의해 경복궁에서 시해되었다. 1897년(광무 1) 명성이라는 시호가 부여되었고, 고종의 황제 즉위와 대한제국 선포 직후 황후로 추존되었다. 고종과 함께 경기도 남양주 금곡의 홍릉에 합장되어 있다.
