건춘문 현판

Definition

‘봄을 세운다’는 뜻이 된다. ‘건(建)’은 입(立)과 통하므로 이를 입춘(立春)의 의미, 즉 ‘봄이 시작된다’는 뜻으로 볼 수 있다. 오행에서 동쪽은 봄과 통하므로 동쪽 문에 춘(春) 자를 흔히 붙인다.

‘건춘(建春)’이란 용어는 『예기(禮記)』의 「월령(月令)」 편 가운데 “1월에 태양은 영실성(營室星) 자리에 있고, 해질녘에는 삼성(參星)이 남중(南中)하며, 아침에는 미성(尾星)이 남중한다. 그 날은 갑을(甲乙)이고 그 제(帝)는 태호(太호) 이며 그 신은 구망(句芒) 이다.…(중략)…기러기가 온다.”에 대한 공영달(孔穎達, 574~648년)의 주석에서 확인할 수 있다. 중국 당나라 때의 학자인 공영달은 이 구절을 성인이 천시(天時)를 받드는 일, 그리고 만물과 절후를 명확히 한 것이라고 풀이한다. 그리고 나서 후한 때의 학자인 채옹(蔡邕, 133~192년)의 말을 빌려 ‘먼저 봄을 세우고[建春] 하늘을 받든다’고 덧붙였다.
