Definition
‘‘양의(兩儀)’란 본래 ‘양과 음’을 의미한다. 여기에서 유래해 ‘하늘과 땅’ ‘남자와 여자’의 뜻도 지닌다. 『주역』 「계사상전」에서 양의라는 말의 전거를 찾을 수 있다. “역(易)에 태극(太極)이 있으니, 태극이 양의(兩儀)를 낳고 양의가 사상(四象) 을 낳고 사상이 팔괘(八卦)를 낳으니, 팔괘가 길흉(吉凶)을 정하고 길흉이 큰 사업(事業)을 낳는다.”고 했다. 『본의(本義)』에서는 “양의(兩儀)는 처음 한 획을 그어 음양을 나눈 것이다.”라고 풀이했다.
