Definition

함녕전 왼쪽에 있는 건물이다. 외국 사신이나 조정 대신들의 접견실로 쓰였다. 원래 이 자리에는 명성황후의 빈전(殯殿) 과 혼전(魂殿)으로 쓰이던 경효전(景孝殿)이 있었으나, 1904년 대화재 이후 경효전을 수옥헌(重明殿, 지금의 중명전) 방면으로 옮겼다. 이 자리에 1906년 지금의 덕홍전을 지었으며, 1911년에 개조했다. 덕수궁 건물 가운데 가장 나중에 지은 것으로, 바닥에는 서양 양탄자가 깔려 있고 천장에도 서양 조명등이 달려 있다. 또한 대한제국 문장인 황금빛 이화문(李花文: 자두꽃 무늬)가 곳곳에 박혀있다.
