해설문
국문
독락당은 조선 전기의 문신이자 성리학의 대가인 이언적(1491-1553)이 살던 집이다. 이언적은 1514년 과거에 급제하여 여러 관직을 역임하였으나, 1532년 정쟁에 휘말려 잠시 관직에서 물러나고, 고향인 경주 지역에 돌아와 이 집에 머물렀다.
독락당은 안채, 사랑채, 행랑채, 공수간, 어서각, 사당으로 구성되어 있다. 계정이라는 이름의 정자는 후원 영역에 있다. 안채는 1516년에 지어졌고, 사랑채를 비롯한 다른 건물들은 1532년 이후에 지어졌다.
독락당의 건물들은 주변 자연 경관과 조화를 이루고 있다. 특히 계정에서 보이는 자계천의 경관은 매우 아름답다. 또한 사랑채 옆쪽 담장에는 나무로 살을 대어 만든 창을 달아서 대청에서 계곡을 내다볼 수 있게 했다.
사랑채 대청에 ‘독락당’이라고 쓴 현판이 걸려있으며, ‘독락당’은 ‘홀로 즐기는 곳’이라는 뜻으로, 시끄러운 바깥일과 관계를 끊고 자연에서 학문을 즐기려는 이언적의 생각을 보여준다.
영문
Dongnakdang House was the residence of Yi Eon-jeok (1491-1553), a civil official and one of the most prominent Confucian scholars of the Joseon period. Yi passed the state examination in 1514 and served in various government posts. In 1532, he was temporarily removed from office, after being involved in a political dispute, and returned to his hometown in Gyeongju to stay in this house.
Dongnakdang consists of a women’s quarters, men’s quarters, servants’ quarters, shrine, and two ancilliary buildings. A pavilion named Gyejeong is also located in the rear garden. The women’s quarters was built in 1516, and the other buildings, including the men’s quarters, were built after 1532.
The buildings of this house harmonize well with the surrounding natural environment. The picturesque view of Jagyecheon Stream from Gyejeong Pavilion is especially breathtaking. In addition, the wall in front of the men’s quarters has the unique feature of a wooden window with vertical lattices, so that the stream can be viewed from the wooden-floored hall of the men’s quarters.
The wooden-floored hall of the men’s quarters features a plaque with the residence's name, “Dongnakdang (獨樂堂),” which means “a hall for solitary enjoyment.” This name symbolizes Yi Eon-jeok’s wish to leave the complicated secular world and enjoy studying in nature.
