十一日, 漂大洋中, 是日陰, 清晨至一島, 石壁嵯峨甚險峻,海波震荡,激上____,幾一二丈. 丹隨波直入,勢迫擊碎,權山大哭,遂竭力運船,孝子、程保等,亦親攬帆邊阿綱,視風波或縱或引,時則水從海入島,風從島出海, 舟從風回旋,得免於患,夕至一大島,島又岩石立,欲泊舟不得,以福脫衣躍入水中,搜舟游泳,綠島岸以繫,舟人喜倒蘭下寬溪流,不甘水而飲,負没欲做飯,臣曰:“飢餓之極,五臟塗附,若賺得食飽,則必死,莫若先飲藥水,繼之以粥,適可而止可也.”舟人皆颜粥而吸,島無避風風處,故夜又縱舟而去.

이 날은 흐렸습니다.

새벽에 한 섬에 도착하니 석벽이 우뚝 솟아 매우 험준하였습니다.

바다 물결이 넘실대다 석벽에 부딪치면 거의 1-2장(丈)을 솟구쳤습니다.

배가 물결을 따라 곧장 들어가 부딪쳐 부서질 지경이 되니, 권산은 크게 울부짖다가 마침내 있는 힘을 다하여 배를 몰았습니다.

효자와 정보 등도 또한 돛대 가의 밧줄을 직접 잡고 풍랑을 보아가며 놓아주기도 하고 당기기도 하였습니다.

그때 물이 바다로부터 섬 쪽으로 들어가고 바람은 섬으로부터 바다 쪽으로 나오니, 배가 바람을 따라 휘돌아 나와 화를 면하게 되었습니다.

저녁에 어떤 큰 섬에 도착하였는데 섬은 바위가 깎아지른 듯하였으므로, 배를 대려고 해도 댈 수가 없었습니다.

이복이 옷을 벗고는 물속으로 뛰어 들어가 배를 끌고 헤엄을 쳐서 섬 기슭에 붙들어 매었습니다.

배 안 사람들은 기뻐하며 구르듯이 마구 뛰어 내려가 시냇물을 찾아 손으로 움켜 달콤한 물을 떠 마시고는, 물을 지고 와서 밥을 짓고자 하였습니다.

신이, “굶주림이 극도에 달하면 오장이 말라붙게 되는데 만약 갑자기 밥을 배부르게 먹는다면 반드시 죽게 될 것이다. 먼저 미음을 마신 뒤 죽을 먹되 적당히 먹고 그만두는 게 좋을 것이다”라고 하였더니,

배 안 사람들이 모두 죽을 끓여서 먹었습니다.

섬에는 바람을 피할 곳이 없었으므로 밤에 또 배를 풀어서 떠났습니다.

11th Day. Adrift in the Ocean. This day was cloudy. At dawn we came to an island that had sheer stone precipices and was extremely forbidding. The sea was heavy, and the waves dashed up the rocks some ten or twenty feet. The boat was following the waves directly in, threatening a crisis in which we should be broken to bits. Kwon San wept loudly and then tried with all his strength to turn the boat. Hyo-ja and Chong Po seized the ropes along the edge of the sail and pulled on them or let up according to the direction of the wind and waves. At the time, the current was from the sea to the island, and the wind was from the island to the sea. The boat followed the wind and turned back, and we avoided disaster. In the evening we came to a large island. It, too, had cliffs and rocks rising steeply. We wanted to moor the boat but could not. I-hok took off his clothes, jumped into the water, and swam ahead, guiding the boat. He climbed the shore of the island and fastened the boat to it. The men, overjoyed, tumbled out recklessly, sought out a stream, took the fresh water in their cupped hands, and drank. Turning from drawing the water, they wanted to prepare food. I said, “In the extremity of hunger the five organs are stuck together. If you suddenly eat to the full, you will surely die. It is better first to drink rice water and follow it with congee. You should stop when you have had the right amount.” The boatmen all boiled congee and sipped it. Since there was no place to escape the wind on the island, at night we freed the boat and went.
