문화유산 해설문
화성(華城)은 경기도 수원에 있는 조선 시대의 성곽이다. 정조(正祖)가 자신의 부친인 장헌세자의 묘를 옮기면서 읍치소를 이전하고 주민을 이주시킬 수 있는 신도시를 건설하기 위해 방어 목적으로 조성하였다. 1794년 2월에 착공하여 2년 반에 걸친 공사 후 완공되었다. 성곽 전체 길이는 5.74Km이며, 높이 4~6m의 성벽이 130㏊의 면적을 에워싸고 있다.
처음부터 계획되어 신축된 성곽이라는 점, 거주지로서의 읍성과 방어용 산성을 합하여 하나의 성곽도시로 만들었다는 점, 전통적인 축성 기법에 동양과 서양의 새로운 과학적 지식과 기술을 적극적으로 활용하였다는 점, 그 이전의 우리나라 성곽에 흔치 않았던 다양한 방어용 시설이 많이 첨가되었다는 점, 주변 지형에 따라 자연스러운 형태로 조성해 독특한 아름다움을 보여 준다는 점 등의 특징이 있다. 1801년에 간행된 화성 준공보고서인 『화성성역의궤(華城城役儀軌)』를 통해 공사의 자세한 전말을 알 수 있다.[1]
