Seokjin Cuts Off His Finger (Group Translation)
兪石珎。高山縣吏也。父天乙得惡疾。每日一發。發則氣絶。人不忍見。石珎日夜侍側無懈。號泣于天。廣求醫藥。人言生人之骨。和血而飮。則可愈。石珎卽斷左手無名指。依言以進。其病卽瘳。
詩）
父患沉痾久未痊。兒心悶絶叫蒼天。
誰知一粒靈丹劑。却在無名指細硏。
父子天倫萬古同。奈隨王化有汙隆。
觀圖每向高風揖。藉甚名聲永不窮。
Yoo Seokjin was an official of Gosan prefecture. His father Cheoneul gained a malicious disease. The disease flared up once every day and he would faint afterwards. Other people could not bare to see him. Day and night Seokjin waited by at his father’s side and and showed no laziness. He wept and wailed to the Heaven, and searched everywhere for medicine. A man said if a living man’s bone mixed with blood and is consumed, it can cure a person immediately. Seokjin promptly cut off his left fourth finger. Relying on the words, he proceeded, and the disease was shortly cured.

The father was deeply troubled by an illness, not getting any better. The child cried out to the Heaven.
Who knew that one grain of miraculous medicine is right in the nameless finger finely ground?
The fate of the father and son is the same for all epoch. How would that rise and fall follow the influences of the kings?
I look to this picture and bow each time I turn to that high moral air. His exalted reputation will never expire.
