Dear Doctor,	박사님,
Your letter containing the very pleasant new of Dr. Heron's appointment reached us this morning and rejoiced us very much. As the mail leaves again very early in the morning I hasten to drop you a line although it is Sunday and one hardly cares to spend it in letter writing.	헤론인물 의사가 임명을 받았다는 반가운 소식을 담은 박사님의 편지가 우리에게 오늘 아침 도착했습니다. 우리는 무척 기뻤습니다. 우편물은 아침 일찍이 다시 보내지기 때문에 오늘은 보통 편지 쓰는데 시간을 보내지 않는 주일(主日)이지만 서둘러 몇 자 적어 보내드립니다.
The Hospital is indeed in great need of the new Doctor's aid. Dr. Allen has been working very hard, he is at the Hospital every morning for operations of which he has from 4 to 6 every day and in these he feels very much the need of the aid and advice of another Physician. I have been helping him in the afternoons in his dispensary work where the patients now number nearly 70 per day. Thus far there has been a steady increase in the numbers and if they go on at the present rate as we have every reason to believe they will I don't know what they will do with them all before the summer is out.	병원에서는 새로운 의사의 도움을 절실하게 필요로 하고 있습니다. 알렌인물 의사는 매우 열심히 일해 왔습니다. 매일 아침 병원에서 알렌인물 의사의 집도(執刀)로 수술이 이루어지고 있는데, 매번 수술시간은 4시간에서 6시간 정도 걸립니다. 이러한 상황에서 알렌인물은 다른 의사의 도움과 조언이 절실히 필요하다고 생각하고 있습니다. 오후에는, 하루에 환자들이 거의 70명 가까이 찾아오는 약국 일로 그를 돕고 있습니다. 지금까지 환자들의 수가 꾸준히 증가했으며 현재의 비율로 계속 증가한다면 - 그렇게 될 것이 틀림없는데-여름이 다 가기도 전에 환자들을 모두 수용할 방법이 요원할 것 같습니다.
The property that Dr. Allen had obtained is in a very good position and as you know it is right next to the American Legation and on the same hill with that of the English. It is undoubtedly owing to this fact that it was the only property owned by foreigners (outside of the Legations) that escaped destruction during the late disturbance except that of Mr. Moellendorf who had a guard to take care of his and even then his was very such damaged and one building was burned to the ground while that of the mission was not damaged at all. There is still left one piece of property to fill out the hill on which the Legations & the mission properties are situated. It is a large piece and its buildings are in a very good condition. It is now for sale at about $700. but the Dr. thinks he can get it for $500. The Methodists and Congregationalists have both looked at it and the Dr. has decided to take it himself and hold it till he hears from the board. He will hold it till the 1st of July. While we have land enough on which to build schools or new houses for other missionaries when they get here yet it is not the land that costs here but buildings, land being at a mere nominal price, while the whole cost of this piece which surmounts the hill is less than what it would cost to put up new buildings. If the board are soon to send out new missionaries to be learning the language this property ought not to be allowed go or at least it ought to be held on to for school buildings as it is in the only safe part of the whole city for foreigner's property. If Dr. Allen does not hear from you to the contrary by the 1st of July he will turn over the property to either the Methodist or Congregationalists. The world "yes" to the enclosed registered address at Yokohama will be forwarded to us at once and they will stop the sale of the property to the Methodists or anyone else.	알렌인물의사가 얻게 된 건물공간은 매우 좋은 위치에 있으며 박사님께서 아시다시피 미국 공사관공간 바로 옆에 있으며, 영국 공사관공간이 있는 같은 언덕 위에 있습니다. 최근의 소요사건에서 해를 입지 않은 것은 분명히, 이곳이 공사관 이외에 외국인이 소유한 유일한 장소였다는 사실에 기인한 것입니다. 선교부 건물은 조금도 상하지 않은 반면, 묄렌도르프인물는 자신의 집을 보호하고자 보초까지 세워두었지만 그의 집공간은 크게 손상되었으며, 한 건물은 완전히 불타버리기도 했습니다. 공사관과 선교부 건물이 위치해 있는 그 언덕의 활용도를 높일 수 있는 필지의 한 부분이 남아 있습니다. 그 면적도 넓고 그곳의 건물들도 매우 좋은 위치에 있습니다. 이제 그곳은 700달러에 나와 있는데 알렌인물 의사는 500달러를 주면 얻을 수 있다고 생각합니다. 감리교인들단체과 회중교회단체 사람들이 모두 그곳에 대해 관심이 있는데 알렌인물 의사는 본부에서 전갈을 받을 때까지 그것을 확보해 보유하고 있기로 결정했습니다. 알렌인물은 7월 1일까지 그것을 보유하고 있을 것입니다. 우리에게 학교 건물과 새로 이곳에 오는 선교사들이 살 집을 지을 수 있는 충분한 땅이 있습니다만 이곳에서는 돈이 많이 드는 것은 땅이 아니라 건물입니다. 땅을 매매하는 경우에는 단지 명목적인 비용이 지불 될 뿐이어서 언덕 위에 있는 땅 값에 비해 새로운 건물을 세우는 데 더 많은 경비가 들게 됩니다. 본부에서 이제 곧 새로운 선교사를 보내주어 그분들이 서울에 와 언어를 공부하게 된다면 이곳은 팔려서는 안될 것입니다. 그곳은 서울시 전지역에서 외국인이 있기에는 유일하게 안전한 지역에 있으므로 최소한 학교 건물로 사용할 수 있도록 유지되어야 할 것입니다. 알렌인물 의사가 7월 1일까지 박사님이 반대한다는 견해를 듣지 못한다면 그는 감리교인들단체이나 회중교회단체 사람들에게 그 필지를 넘겨주게 될 것입니다. 동봉해 보내드리는 요코하마공간의 주소로 “바라는 대로 하라”는 말씀을 즉시 우리에게 전해 주십시오. 그러면 그곳은 감리교인들이나 혹은 다른 누구에게도 팔리지 않게 될 것입니다.
