After entering high school, I was introduced to 'Global Camp' which I had never experienced before when I was in middle school. Actually, I participated also in the global camp last summer . If I participated with simple curiosity because it was my first experience in summer, this time it was different. The experience gave me a lot of information, a chance to talk in English with foreigner, and it gave me an opportunity to develop a sense of cooperation because each team shares their roles. So, I participated voluntarily this winter also.

Our Team5's topic is 'Human Rights and Media during the Colonial Period.' Students who are interested in human rights and the press gathered to form a team. Among them, I chose this topic because I am currently hoping for a field related to "human rights". Because I also wanted to be in the "diplomatic" field, I had a lot of think about between the topic related 'human rights' and the topic related 'diplomatic'. But I ended up choosing this team. I have never regretted this choice. At first, We actually felt it hard to relate to the big theme of this global camp, 'Ganghwa'. The subject of human rights and the media itself had little to do with the Ganghwa compared to other teams. The teacher was worried about this, too. However, We thought ‘Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876’ who ignored this country, such as the topic all time.

Regarding this topic, I have already taken classes in the subject (national history). Thanks to this, it was easier to gather information. Treaty of Ganghwa Island was forcibly concluded by Japan as Korea people's opinion is ignoring by them in 1876. South Korea during Japanese occupation, there is more case that people invaded human rights . For example, ‘comfort women’, forced labor, newspaper and suppression of the press and other events that many people know. I am interested in ‘comfort women’ . To this day, Japan has not apologized and repaid all sincere apologies and even denied the fact. Over time, even though the number of  ‘comfort women’ grandmothers is shrinking trend, but Japan has the same attitude. I knew this before the data investigation.

But as always, all I know is not everything. Data investigations show that there is more information than I know. I learned more about the contents of a treaty of treaty of Ganghwa Island and treaty of Ganghwa Island of places that had signed (yeonmudang). I newly learned about newspapers, ‘ Dong-A Ilbo’ which was also executed during Japanese occupation. The Dong-A Ilbo has published a series of criticisms on policies in newspapers such as the Joseon flogging command, law on National General Mobilization, and the prohibition of the use of Korean language. I think all newspapers during the Japanese occupation is censored, but I was surprised to find a newspaper that did such a great thing.

We had a camp for two nights and three days as before. The other thing is that if I had time to prepare as a team from morning to afternoon before, I had after school class this morning, so I had time to prepare from afternoon this time, so I think I was sitting in front of the computer until midnight. On the first day, we decided on a detailed topic together. After that, we divided it up into parts to search and translate the data to , and after that, collected the documents with the help of the team leader for be uploaded to Wikipedia. I usually interested in ‘comfort women’, so I had responsible for that part. On the second day, We finished wiki materials that we couldn't finished on the first day, and worked hard to prepare for the presentation the next day. We divided up teams to prepare for the presentation effectively. Teams are such as find more data, make ppt, andwrite scripts. Among them, I was 'make ppt' team with a friend. Actually, to me it was a challenge. I didn't usually think that I was good at making ppt, so I tried it with courage and perseverance. Of course, it took me a long time to make, but after finishing it, I felt proud. I made the necessary video in the middle and put it in the ppt, but it was a bit disappointing that the video was not released during the presentation. After preparing for the presentation, our team was immersed in the play practice, as it was the third day.

In fact, there was a difference of opinion with the friend in the process of making the ppt. Also, opinions about play contents clashed in the process of preparing for the presentation. But in this process, I learned how to effectively coordinate each other's opinions and realized that we should respect each other. Also, I was able to grow more cooperative spirit, and I had a chance to talk to my teacher directly by combining the words I know like last global camp. Especially when I saw our team leader taking the lead, I could see that 'leadership' was something like that. During the global camp last summer and this winter, I chose different subjects. This is because the field of hope has changed a little. However, through this camp, I became more interested in the subject and further cemented my dream of the field of 'human rights' that I am currently hoping for.

2018 Summer Personal Essay

Topic: Goryeo's Civil Service Examination and Educational Institutes

Team: 6

Name: Han Gayoung (한가영)

Student Number: 10122

These days, unless you go abroad, you don't have many chances to talk to foreigners in person. Also, there are no foreign teachers at the school, so there is no chance to meet them. So, I joined the 2018 Global Forum Camp because I could spend three days talking with a foreign teacher.

My dream is to be a middle and high school teacher and among them is to be a math teacher. I think to be a good teacher, I need to know about the previous education methods and institutions. So I decided on this topic to find out about Goryeo's institutions and educational institutions that was established on the Korean Peninsula. In fact, I have already learned about Goryeo in school. The educational institutions of Goryeo were district school and National University, and it was already known that there was a civil service examination for selecting officials. But when I was learning at school, I didn't have enough time to learn the whole contents of Goryeo in a set time exactly. It was difficult to know the details because we learn the basics, namely when and where it made and used like this. So I found out exactly what was going on with the documents. In Royal academy, king who emphasized confucianism strengthened the system for public school and king who emphasized Buddhism strengthened the system for privite education. In district school, the political will to diffuse confucianism to base society was appeared. That’s why the necessity of local confucian school was increased. Like this, I think it was a great opportunity to know the details that were not in the textbooks.

On the first day, our group had a lot of thought about the format of the presentation. We were confused how to do it well, but we thought we should do it differently with other group. So we decided to do a play. Originally, We thought of making a video clip, but it would be appropriate to act on the spot with just a few props because of time. So we did a role division. I was a research team. So I did some research on the system of the Goryeo Dynasty, the Royal school, and local confucian school . At first, it was not easy to find data. Multiple scattered data had to be gathered and consolidated. Then, I wrote down the lines for our play. Taking advantage of my ability to type well, I started playing videos and writing scripts. But, It turned out to be too short a play to our thinking. I created the script by extending the short lines with my friend and producing the later ones. It would be great if I wore a genuine Goryeo dress to be realistic in the play, but the situation was not the case, so I bought a hardboard and drew a picture with a magic touch. That will be our clothes. Looking at the uniforms on the Internet, he painted them with his magic and painted them one by one. After all, it looked like a uniform and pretty. During this camp, I am now really perfect for the civil service examination, the Royal Academy, and Local Confucian academy. When friends ask, I can answer them and explain them. My mom has been telling me ' Language improves only when used. ' The same was true of English. Actually, when I met my teacher for the first time, I felt really at a loss. I had nothing to say when I first met him, and actually I had something to say, but I couldn't get out of my mouth. But now, I could try to speak with confidence and naturally answer what my teacher said. I was surprised and pleased because my English seemed to have improved. I think it was a good action and a great opportunity that I attend the 2018 Global Forum Camp. I am willing to give it another try if I have a chance later.
