When Yi Seung-hun, after being baptized in China under Jesuit missionaries, brough Catholic texts to Korea and began teaching others in 1784, many people began to apply Catholic standards to their lives. 자기소개
성장과정
나는 미국에 텍사스 엘파소에서 3남 중 막내로 태어났다. 아버지는 철강 노동자였고 어머니는 간호사였다. 부모님은 언제나 열심히 일하였다. 가끔 우리는 공과금을 지불할 만큼의 돈 외에는 아무것도 없어서 아버지는 일자리를 하나 더 얻었다. 나는 우리 아버지가 고통을 많이 받는 걸 봤다. 그 당시에 우리 가족은 루터 교회를 다녔다. 아버지는 매주 열심히 기도하였는데 그 모습을 보고 저는 하느님에 대해서 궁금했다. 그 당시에 나는 검소하게 살고 싶어하는 사람들을 좋아하기 시작했고 검소한 생활에 흥미를 느꼈다. 나는 부자가 되는 것에 대한 관심이 없었다. 고등학교 때 제가 가장 좋아하는 수업이 인문학이었다. 나는 3학기 동안 인문학 수업을 들었다. 인문학 수업을 진행하는 교사는 나에게 깊은 감동을 주었다. 그 선생은 나에게 Studs Terkel과 빈센트 반 고흐의 검소한 생활을 통해 삶의 지혜를 가르쳐 주었다. 인문학 수업을 듣는 동안에 친구들과 한번 이탈리아에 다녀왔다. 그 곳에 있는 박물관에서 많은 미술작품을 봤다. 나는 그 미술작품에 속한 겸손한 인물의 이야기에 대한 관심이 항상 있었다. 그 때부터 나는 검소하고 평범한 삶을 사는 사람들의 이야기를 듣는 것을 좋아하기 시작했다.
학문
고등학교 졸업 이후에 미네소타에서 St. Olaf 대학교를 다녔다. 나는 대학 시절, 연극과 철학을 전공했지만 1년반 이후에 건강 상의 이유로 고향에 돌아가야만 했다. 9개월 이후에 몬태나로 이사하여 몬태나 대학교를 다니기 시작했다. 거기서 초등교육을 전공하고 교육 방법론도 공부했다. 왜냐하면, 나는 인간의 배우는 방식에 대해 관심이 있었기 때문이다. 2005년, 대학을 졸업한 후에 나는 콜로라도로 이사하여 노숙 청소년과 상담하는 일을 하기 시작했다. 이때, 평범한 사람들의 이야기를 쫓아다니면서 얻은 지식은 새로운 방법으로 이용해야 한다는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 영어만 할 줄 아는 내가 미국을 떠나서 한국에 왔다. 한국에서 새로운 문화를 경험하고 한국어를 배우면서 영어를 가르치게 되었다. 지금까지 한국과 한국 문화를 통해서 얻은 지식을 적용하고 싶고 이것은 한국학중앙연구원을 통해서 실현할 수 있다.
자신의 장단점 및 특기사항
나는 열정적인 사람이다. 나는 다른 사람들과 이야기하면서 서로 알아가는 것을 정말 좋아한다. 나는 대학교 졸업 이후 10년 동안 교사 및 상담사로 재직하였다. 이 시기 동안 나는 다양한 이야기를 많이 들었다. 나는 그 이야기들을 영원히 기억하고 싶어 사진과 동영상으로 만들었다. 그리고 나는 다른 사람들을 돕는 일이라면 무엇이든 할 수 있다. 예전에 내가 노숙인 실무자로 일했을 당시 폭설이 내려 사흘 동안 쉬지 않고 일했다. 그 동안 노숙 청소년들과 많은 이야기를 나누면서 그들을 도와주고 싶은 마음이 생겼으며, 또한 그들의 이야기를 영원히 기억하고 싶었다. 하지만 나는 ‘완벽주의’라는 단점도 지니고 있다. 나는 어떤 일을 시작해서 완벽하게 끝내지 못할 것 같으면, 포기하곤 했다. 그러나 친구들의 도움으로 나는 완벽하지 않은 스스로를 수용하는 법을 배우게 되었고 완벽주의라는 단점을 극복할 수 있었다. 인생관 모든 사람은 각자마다 그들의 이야기를 가지고 있다. 그 이야기들은 친구들과 가족들에게 구전되어 매일 전해집이다. 그래도 대부분의 사람들의 이야기들은 전해지지 않고, 전해지더라도 잠시 지나가는 이야기로 쉽게 잊혀집이다. 모든 이야기들을 보고 들을 수 있다면 우리는 하느님의 얼굴을 잠깐 들여다 볼 수 있는 것과 마찬가지의 경험을 할 수 있을 것이다.

In December of 2018, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visited Korea for the fourth time in celebration of the 50th anniversary of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Seoul.
His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits St. Maxim's Church in Seoul
On December 5, 2018, after the Great Vespers of the Feast of St. Nicholas, a reception dinner was held in honor of HAH’s Visit to Korea. After a delicious meal and wonderful performances given by the faithful of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Seoul, HAH Bartholomew suddenly requested to visit St. Maxim the Greek’s Chapel which is directly adjacent to the cafeteria in which the reception was held. St. Maxim the Greek’s Chapel is the church in which the faithful of St. Nicholas Cathedral use for daily services and is primarily used by the large Slavic community who live and work in Korea. Fr. Roman Kavchak serves the Slavic community and was present for HAH’s visit as well as Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea. Several others of the St. Nicholas Cathedral were there to warmly greet the Patriarch. The visit was memorable and we are happy to share it with you.
5 декабря 2018 года,после великой вечерни праздника святителя Николая Чудотворца, был организован приемный ужин в честь празднования визита в Корею Вселенского Патриархата. После вкусной трапезы и замечательных выступлений прихода собора св. Николая Чудотворца в Сеуле, Его Святейшество Варфоломей неожиданно попросил посетить часовню св. Максима Грека, которая находится рядом с трапезной, в которой проходил прием. Часовня св. Максима Грека - это церковь, которую приход собора св.Николая Чудотворца использует для повседневного служения и в основном используется большой славянской общиной, которая живет и работает в Корее. Батюшка Роман Кавчак служит при славянской общине и присутствовал на визите Вселенского Патриархата, также как и митрополит Корейский Амвросий. Несколько прихожан из прихода собора Николая Чудотворца так же присутствовали, чтобы тепло поприветствовать Патриарха. Визит был незабываемым, и мы рады поделиться им с вами.
서울 성 니콜라스 성당의 신자들이 주신 맛있는 식사와 멋진 공연 후, 세계 총 대주교님 바르톨로메오스 갑자기, 만찬이 열린 식당에서 바로 인접한 그리스 성 막심의 성당을 방문해 달라고 요청하셨습니다. 2018년 12월 5일, 성 니콜라스 축일 대만과 이후, 세계 총대주교님의 한국 방문을 기념하기 위해 리셉션 만찬이 열렸습니다. 그리스 성막심 성당은 성 니콜라스 성당의 신자들이 매일 예배하는 성당으로, 한국에 살면서 일하는 슬라브의 큰 공동체로 주로 사용되고 있습니다. 로만 카브차크 신부님(Fr. Roman Kavchak)은 스라브(Slavic) 공동체를 위해 봉사하고 세계 총대주교님과 암브로시오스 대주교님(Metropolitan Ambrosios)의 방문에 참석했습니다. 성 니콜라스 성당의 몇몇 다른 신자들도 거기서 총대주교님을 따뜻하게 맞이하기 위해 있었습니다. 그 방문은 기억에 남았고 우리는 당신과 함께 그것을 공유하게 되어 기쁩니다.

12월 7일 금요일, 세계총대주교님과 신자들이 함께 저녁식사 자리를 가졌습니다. 성 니콜라스 대성당 건립
50주년을 기념하여 방문해주신 바르톨로메오스 총대주교님께 감사드리는 의미로 한국 전통 축하공연이
이어졌습니다. 그 공연에 감동 받으신 총대주교청의 비싸리온 대신부님께서는 즉석에서 피아노로 비잔틴
음악을 연주하며 화답하셨습니다. 특히, 한국 공연단의 장구와의 합주를 통해 한국과 비잔틴 전통을
연결시키셨습니다. 갑작스러운 제안에도 연주는 아름다웠고 연주가 끝난 후, 그 자리에 있던 모든 신자들은
박수갈채를 멈추지 못하였습니다.
On Friday, December 7th, His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the faithful of
St. Nicholas Parish in Seoul had a reception dinner together to celebrate the 50th anniversary
of the construction of St. Nicholas cathedral. Traditional Korean musicians performed and
Father Vissarion, moved by their performances, decided to play improvisational piano with the
traditional Korean drummer. Blending Greek music with a traditional Korean Pansori drummer,
a wonderful momentous occasion occurred. The audience was surprised and awed by such a
spontaneous musical miracle.

Last fall of 2018, the school here held a promotional video contest. Whoever could make the best
promotional video for the school could win about a thousand dollars. There is nothing more that
I love than subverting the norm, so I registered for the contest and made this here video.
Inspired by the P&G commercials that run during the Olympics, and in honor and love for my Mother,
Cindi Lionberger, and all the mom's around the world, I put my heart into this project.
There were three groups that participated in the contest.
We took third. ~Go figure.
