* 1439년 광주목사가 광주토호 노홍준의 애첩이던 광주교방의 기생과 정을 통하였는데 이일로 노홍준이 광주목사를 구타한 사건이 발생했다. 이 일로 노홍준은 물론 광주 사람에게도 연대책임을 물어 광주목이 무진군으로 강등되었다.<br />
* 조선 초에 설립된 것으로 보이는 광주교방이 1908년에 폐지된 후 1917년 경에 기생조합이 설립되었으나 얼마후 또다른 기생조합이 설립되어 경쟁하자, 이를 통합하여 광주예기조합이 되었다. 광주예기조합은 1932년에 광주권번으로 재출범하였고, 광복 이후에 광주국악원으로 맥이 이어졌다.<br />
* 광주권번은 기생양성소이자, 전통예술 교육기관으로 학예부에는 학감, 부학감, 강사 등이 있었다. 교육생은 3년의 교육기간 동안 판소리와 기악, 무용 등을 배웠다.<br />
* 학감과 강사로는 박동실, 정광수, 박석기 등이 있었고, 교육생으로는 훗날 무형문화재로 지정된 박초월, 김소희, 박송희, 한애순, 안채봉, 이매방 등 뛰어난 인물이 많았다.<br />
