Previously when we had left Cheju, the boatmen had unwisely loaded water from land into a tender to be towed after us. After drifting away with the wind, we were separated from it and lost it. There was not one container of fresh water in the boat. We were not able to boil water or cook food and had nothing to eat or drink. We were in a desperate condition. Kwon Song told me, “I have noticed that some of the men in the boat brought yellow oranges and refined wine, and they are greedily eating them up. Let us have them collected and taken to the upper storehouse. We can store them and relieve our thirst with them.” I ordered Kõisan to search through all the baggage in the boat. He got more than fifty yellow oranges and two jugs of wine. I said to Son Hyo-ja, “When they are together in a boat, men of Hu and Yüeh are like one. That is even more so with us, all men of one country, of the same flesh and bones. If we are to live, let us all live at the same time. If we are to die, let us all die at the same time. These oranges and this wine are all there are. One drop is worth a thousand pieces of gold. You take charge, therefore, and do not waste any, so that they can be used to relieve the thirst of the men in the boat.” Hyo-ja inspected the men and gave those whose lips were parched and mouths cankerous some oranges and wine to eat and drink. He gave them only enough to moisten their tongues. In a few days both the oranges and wine were consumed. Some of the men chewed dried rice grains fine and caught their urine in their hands to drink. Before long the urine, too, dried up. Their diaphragms dry and burning, unable to utter sounds, they were almost dead. At that point, rain fell. Some of the boatmen held up the awning flaps and caught the drops, and some used rain hats and cauldrons to gather the drops. Some curved mats and got them, and some tied paper strings to the mast and oars and took what dripped down. By these means they hoped to get some water and lick it off with their tongues. An Ui said, “If we took the moisture from clothing wet by the rain and drank it, we should really get a good deal. But the boatman's clothes have all been soaked by salt water. Even if we soaked them in the rain for moisture, we could not drink it. 
 That being the case, what can be done?” I then picked and brought out several pieces of clothing that had been stored. I ordered Kõisan to let them be soaked with rain and to collect the moisture from them. It came to several jars, I ordered Kim Chung to ration it with a spoon and let the men drink. Chung raised the spoon, and the boatmen opened their mouths wide, like fledgling swallows waiting to be fed. Only afterwards were they able for the first time to move their tongues and belch. They felt a little more like living.
