언어는 문화의 가장 기본적인 상징체이다. 문화는 혈연체로 이루어진 동일 언어 집단의 역사적으로 관습화된 습관들의 집합이다. 이 문화 중 구술로 전승되는 전통문화의 기본 수단은 해당 지역의 언어이다. 이에 제주 문화를 이해하는데에 있어 제주 방언에 대한 지식을 알아보는 것도 도움이 될 것이다.

제주방언은 타 지방 방언와 달리 일반인들이 이해하기가 힘들다. 말이 짧고, 대부분 줄임말로 되어 있으며, 어미에’시’가 많이 붙고 조선시대‘아래 아’가 발음상에 남아 있어 더욱 이해하기 어렵다. 그 이유는 제주방안이 그 지리적 특성으로 인해 고어(古語)가 많이 남아 있는 방언으로 알려져 왔기 때문이다. 하지만 ‘아래 아’를 제외하면, 제주방언에 고어가 특별히 더 많다고 단정하기는 어렵다. 한편 제주방언은 대방언권의 하나로, 방언권 내의 언어적 동질성이 매우 강하다. 전통적으로 한라산을 중심으로 산북 방언과 산남 방언으로 구분해 왔지만, 다른 방언권의 경우와 비교할 때, 두 방언의 차이는 하나의 소방언권을 하위 구획한 정도의 차이에 불과하다.
제주인들은 과거로부터 조상들의 삶에서 묻어온 방언들을 생활속 깊속이 간직한 채 살아왔으며, 현재까지도 이러한 방언들이 사용되어 제주도만의 아름다운 문화를 이어오고 있다.
