[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_J-3_Cub L-4 model aircrafts], such as this one, were produced in the 1940s in the United States and were used by the US Army during World War II.

This specific aircraft is one of ten L-4s that the Korean Air Corps, the predecessor of the Republic of Korea Air Force, bought from the US Army in 1948.

The L-4 was highly effective air support in suppressing communist guerrilla units in the Jirisan Mountain area.

During the early phase of the [[한국전쟁|Korean War (1950-1953)]], the ROK Air Force made a number of sorties with L-4s and blocked the enemy’s southward advances.

After the war, this aircraft was used for reconnaissance and transporting commanders, as well as for training pilots and engineers, before being taken out of service in 1954.

==국문 해설문==

1948년 9월 13일 대한민국 공군의 전신인 육군항공대가 미군으로부터 인수한 10대의 항공기 중 하나로 우리 나라가 보유한 최초의 항공기이다.

L-4는 1940년대 미국에서 생산되어 제2차 세계대전 중 미 육군이 사용하던 2인승 연락용 경항공기이다.

우리 공군에서 도입한 이후 지리산 공비토벌작전에서 공중지원 임무를 수행하였고, 6.25전쟁 초기 후방석의 탑승자가 폭탄을 품에 안고 출격·투척하여 이를 예측 못한 적에게 큰 피해를 입히는 등 적 지상군의 남하를 저지하는데 공헌하였다.

이후 연락·지휘관 수송 등 많은 활약을 하였으며, 조종사 양성과 정비사 교육에 사용되다가 1954년 퇴역하였다.

2010년 6월 대한민국 최초의 항공기라는 중요성이 인정되어 등록문화재로 지정되었다.
