 Gwanchoksa Temple located in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, is known for a host of cultural sites and intriguing legends. The most famous attraction of the temple is Seokjomireukbosalipsang Buddha (Treasure No. 218). The construction of the Buddha statue, widely known as “Eunjinmireuk Buddha,” started in 968 during the Goryeo period and lasted for 37 years. When the country’s largest stone Buddha statue was fully built (18.12m in height and 9.9m in girth) in 1006, the temple was said to have been crowded with people coming from across the country. The origin of the name of the temple has to do with the alleged “golden glow” emanating from the stone Buddha, but the original small sculpture placed in the head of the statue is now gone.

 미륵신앙은 일찍 중국에 전해져 성행했고 북위시대(4~6세기)를 정점으로 그 조상도 매우 활발했다. 중국 신앙에는 도솔왕생(兜率往生)과 용화수하삼회설법(龍華樹下三會說法)의 기대(下生)에 있었으며, 조상으로 보살형이 전자, 여래형이 후자의 신앙에 기인한다고하나 예외도 있다. 보살형은 교각상이 많다. 남북조시대의 재명상(在銘像)에는 여래형이 많고 수∙당시대에는 의상(倚像)으로 좌수를 무릎에 올리는 모양이 보편적이었다. 또 당∙송에는 『미륵하생경』에의한 미륵정토변상도가 행해져 둔황에 오대(10세기)경의 벽화 등 수종이 현존함.
