<center>GGHS 2019 Winter - Team #</center>

This is my second time participating in an English camp and it felt different from the previous one. My dream was simply to be an elementary school teacher or a middle school teacher. If I were to be a teacher in middle and high school, I had not decided which subject I wanted to teach. However, I was interested in history and social studies in the second semester, so I wanted to be a teacher who teaches history or society.

I joined this camp because I felt that English camp is very attractive to explore the subject of interest in more depth and to combine it with English. When I participated in summer camp last time, I wanted to be just a teacher, so I went on a field trip to explore education. In this camp, I set the history as a big subject in line with my dream of becoming more specific and explored military incidents in Ganghwa area during the Joseon Dynasty.

In the group, I was assigned to investigate, summarize, and translate the case into English. Although it might have been difficult to summarize other contents, I had learned about Shin Mi-yangyo in the first semester of history class, so it was not very difficult to summarize the data I researched. Shin Mi-yangyo was an incident in 1871 in which the U.S. invaded Joseon by force to open the General Sherman case in 1866, which led to a stronger atmosphere for keeping away from foreign powers in Joseon, and led Heungseon Daewongun to build a monument that would ostracize the West throughout the country.

And I was also in charge of posting all the research on the web site.
Although it was difficult and strange to use coding to upload on a computer, I felt satisfied that I learned another new thing by learning how to express my writing with the symbol of the computer.

Our team prepared for the presentation last after going through data research, modification, and translation. Our team wanted to show the personality of the historical character well. We prepared the presentation as a play because we thought that the best way to show the character's individuality was with a play. I played the role of General Yang Heon-soo and I could feel as if I had been immersed in the history of Ganghwa by memorizing the English ambassador.
After finishing all the presentations, I learned it anew that Ganghwa was a place where the first modern treaty with a foreign country was signed during the Joseon Dynasty, and that it was used militarily and geographically as a strategic hub of the country.

I also felt a lot of things through my camp activities. It was good to explore the areas that I was interested in, and to translate the activities I had explored with knowledge of English grammar. The grammar that I forgot while translating was reminiscent of mine through a native English teacher. Most of all, what remained meaningful and a good memory was the splendid production of the explorations into the play.

There were many good memories during the camp, but there were some difficulties. It was time to talk to our class teacher.
Since the pronunciation of the Russian teacher were unfamiliar to me, I had difficulties communicating with her because I couldn't understand. So I didn't have the courage to try again after the first conversation. However, as I tried to continue the conversation thinking that this was a new experience, I found myself naturally having everyday conversation with my teacher as my teacher's pronunciation became familiar to my ears.

Although the camp was for two nights and three days, I felt one step closer to my dream and it was time to get a lot of things. I feel proud that I had a meaningful time. If I have another chance to participate again, I want to participate again and recommend other friends who have not participated in English camp yet.

The reason I joined this camp was because I felt that the program activity to translate history into English is attractive and wanted to take a step closer to my dream by studying a topic that fits my course.

Our team conducted a survey on the implementation of the civil service system and educational institutions in the category of 'Education of Goryeo'.

The reason why we looked into the civil service system and educational institution was because the civil service system which was implemented at that time greatly helped the maintenance of Goryeo and continued to contribute to the stability and development of the country even after Joseon. It's also because it has produced many great scholars. What I knew about the subject before was a civil service system I had heard about. It was the ninth year of Gwangjong (958 years) of Goryeo that the system was first introduced to Korea. Taking the suggestion of a naturalized Ssanggi, Kwang-jong introduced a system of recruiting new talents according to Confucian scholarship and ability. In the civil service, the system was the most suitable way to recruit that who has no power but has capacity. The most impressive thing we have ever learned was the difference between the Kukjagam, a central educational institution during the Goryeo Dynasty, and Hyanggyo, a local educational institution.
Just to give you a brief introduction..

Royal Academy (Gukjagam) is a public educational institution same as national university. There are many interesting features about Royal Academy.

The same three headings are taught but the qualifications for admission were different. Local Confucian school (hyanggyo) is also a public educational institution to teach confucianism in local. Our team planned the announcement to be a short play and a presentation. I found a video underlying to write a scenario for the play that I was going to give in my presentation, and I added additional content to it. (When I wrote the scenario, I can write funny because I thought about acting actors while writing a scenario.) We also found and translated the background of Goryeo's civil service system. (I could make the method of writing English familiar by translating the contents I found.) And I worked with my teammates to decorate props for the play.

As I expected through this camp is that rare chance to speak English, so I wanted to overcome my fear of speaking English by trying a lot of conversation with native English teachers through this camp. Also, I wanted to be more familiar with English with history as well as English by doing various activities other than studying English in a conventional way, and I wanted to raise my interest in English.
I wanted to keep this camp as my special experience by discussing and presenting it in English during the vacation.

The camp isn't over yet, but I enjoy the activities more than I thought, so I think, I did a good job coming like the principal told.

So I want to participate in next English camp.

Military History and Ganghwa - Joseon Period and Contemporary International Relations
Why did we chose this topic?
We participate the Ganghwa Girl’s High School Glabal Issues Forum in 2019 Winter. Friends who are interested in international relations and military facilities or events centered on Korea gathered. So, we tried hard to unite our various interest in one. As a result, we decided our topic Military History and Ganghwa – Joseon Period and Contemporary International Relations. We are going to deal with the incidents occurred in Ganghwa. Representatively, because there are many military events in Ganghwa, we picked up few representative events; French attack in 1866(Byeongin Yangyo), American Disturbance of 1871(Sinmi Yangyo), UNYOHO incident of 1875, Korean-Japanese Treaty of 1876. Focused on the role of Ganghwa and its meaning, we are tried to connect each military event to past and also to present. Through these activities, we are looking forward to inform the importance of Ganghwa for military and geographical region. Also, focused on Ganghwa, in 19 century, the thoughts for protection our own country developed. For these reasons we thought that we should put forth our efforts to protect and preserve region called Ganghwa.
Lastly, we really hope that many people should recognize the importance of Gangwha as a role of protecting our country.
American Disturbance of 1871(Sinmi Yangyo)
Historical background
In the second half of 19th century the United States began to take an active interest in opening trade with Joseon. In August 1866, a US merchant ship called "the General Sherman" ascended the Daedong River and came to Pyongyang. However, because of the aggressive approach, the crew of "the General Sherman" was killed. Following this incident, in 1871 the United States decided to launch a punitive campaign for the Sherman case. The US demanded compensation for the losses and the establishment of trade relations with Joseon Korea. All of these plans were bound to fail.

Progress
In 1871, the US decided to go to Korea to open the ship. When the US fleet reached the top of the line, a surprise attack from the reinforcements led to the first military conflict between Joe and the United States. On June 10, the United States carried out a landing campaign for the earthquake and the first seasonal war broke out in history.

Finally, the Battle of Gwangseongbo was the most intense battlefield in Sinmyangyô. In this battle, most of the Chosun army, including General Ehyeon Yeon, was stationed. Shinmyangyoyo was recognized as an event that US forces won the battle but defeated the enemy in the case of Joseon. Daewonun set up a shoe ration for the whole country and maintained its policy of seclusion, and refused to demand Japan several times for trade.
UNYOHO incident of 1875
Historical background
After the Tokugawa shogunate time, Japan achieved modernization through the Meiji Restoration. And Japan wanted to expand its influence abroad as other Western countries did. Accordingly, Japan attempted to negotiate with Joseon, which was geographically close, but failed due to Heungseon Daewongun's policy.

Cause and result
when Heungseon Daewongun stepped down in 1873, and King Gojong govern, Japan sent Unyoho to Joseon with a plan to open the doors of Joseon even by force. Unyoho arrival at the port of Busan, the Busan Navy asked for the reason for the military vessel's intrusion, and Inoue, the captain of the ship, said, 'We visited each other for mutual commerce between Japan and Joseon, and we came to explore the coast of Joseon.' japan then reached Ganghwado Island, and some soldiers, including the captain Inoue, approached Ganghwa Island in a boat, and the boat infiltrated without any warning, then Joseon's navies attacked the boat and the Japanese army returned to its battleship and fired retaliatory shells at Joseon as a warship. After landing in Yeongjongjin, the Japanese armed with modern weapons suffered great damage to the Korean military, looted 36 Joseon Dae-guns, 130 Hwaseong guns, and then withdrew. Japan Appear Ganghwa Island, forcing the Korean government to take responsibility for the incident and impose the trade As a result, on February 26, 1876, conclude ‘Korean-Japanese Treaty' , and opened ports to Japan.

Ganghwa island's geographical role
Ganghwa Island, located at the mouth of the Han River, was frequently invaded by foreign powers for Seoul's threats. Therefore, the Ganghwa Strait is historically the most important maritime gateway in the defense and security of Joseon. In the past, the site was the military base for a 40-year-long anti-mongery campaign during the Goryeo Dynasty, and was the last bastion during the Byeongja Lake era. Thus, the entire island of Ganghwa has been fortified to prepare for foreign invasion. Especially, Byeongin Yangyo in 1866 and Sinmi Yangyo in 1871 were invaded by the great powers of the Gumi Empire in the second half of the 19th century. In response, the Joseon government has banned foreign vessels from sailing since Byeongin Yangyo. The monument was erected at the entrance to the Ganghwa Strait and all foreign ships were banned. Even domestic flights were banned without permission.

The Ganghwa Chojijin is a fortress built to prevent enemies from invading the sea, and is believed to have been installed in the 6th year of King Hyojong's reign (1655). This is a fierce battleground that has been constantly fighting against imperialist invasions such as the United States expedition to Korea,French campaign against Korea and the Unyo-ho event. Fort at the time, Chojijin is the place where the soldiers are. but, in 1876, through duress of the hardening of trials by signing a treaty of Japan. There is become the place that no need to defend anymore. In 1973, the fortress was restored.

Meaning and influence
*Meaning
The Unyo-ho incident was recorded as an event that foreshadowed Japan to be forced to open its doors to Joseon, which was excluded from the policy of collapse. In the end, it was Japan's political maneuver that put the foundation for the invasion of Joseon and the invasion of the continent.

Ganghwa Island concluded ‘Korean-Japanese Treaty' . because of un-yo-ho sa-geon. It was also an unequal treaty, but it was the first modern treaty signed by Joseon. Joseon was forced to open its ports, and by the start of this treaty, Japan began to establish a full-scale colonization of the Joseon Dynasty.

*Domestic and foreign influences
Previously, the countries including the U.S. and France, attempted to open Joseon's ports, but they failed due to a policy implemented by Heungseon Daewongun. As a result, Joseon had a slower modernization and less exchanges than other countries.

Ganghwa Island incident, however, by gunboat diplomacy since the signing of ‘Korean-Japanese Treaty' was due to forcibly open the doors and, after the case in Joseon Dynasty. United States and Since 1882 , Joseon has been concluded the treaty of trade with Britain, France, Germany.

Korean-Japanese Treaty of 1876
Historical background
Korean-Japanese Treaty of 1876 is a treaty signed between Korea and Japan in Ganghwa in 1876. Japan, which achieved rapid development into a modern state by establishing a royal regime and carrying out the Meiji Restoration in 1865, has been negotiating to establish a modern diplomatic relationship with Joseon.

At that time, the resumption of the Heungseon Daewongun's esteemed regime and the introduction of the Min clan government led to a new turning point in the diplomatic negotiations. Also influenced the negotiations were the suggestion that it would no longer be beneficial to the national interest to refuse to do so. However, the political atmosphere of the time gradually changed, unlike those who actively supported the policy of depressive government of Daewon County, which was influenced by North Korean studies and literature, and those who called for openness were growing. Meanwhile, the Qing Dynasty recommended that Korea be diplomatic with France and the U.S. while the news of Japan's political clique in Taiwan was growing.

Progress
On February 3, 1876, Japan finally signed a 12-trillion-dollar bill between Shin Heon and Kiyota Kuroda, the acting president of the Korean War, in order to engage in military negotiations over the Unyoho Lake incident, which triggered the artillery attack on the coast by sending it to Ganghwa Island, the gateway to the capital.

Joseon and Japan have equal rights (Article 1) The two countries frequently send envoys to discuss the social affairs after 15 months (Article 2), and Joseon should open two ports other than Busan within 20 months (Article 5), which allows Japanese sailors to measure the shoreline for the sake of the safety of coastal navigation (Article 7), according to the criminal law between the two countries.

In particular, Article 1 was intended to weaken the relationship between Joseon and Qing Dynasty, and Article 5 was intended to invade both politics and military other than trade by opening up Wonsan and Incheon. And Article 7 allowed us to explore the landing site during military operations by gaining the right to survey the coast of Joseon, and Article 10 was an unequal treaty that recognized extraterritorial rights.

The role of Ganghwa
Ganghwa Island has thus become the place where Joseon's first modern treaty with a foreign country was made. Ganghwa has long been a strategic hub of the country and has been used geographically as well as militarily. In other words, it was a place where the nation was guaranteed.

Reinforced fortress across the Preamble yeonmudang (dusanekd) the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876 is finally signed here as a place in Busan, Incheon, Korea, engaged by the Japan-Korea Treaty of our country from Wonsan.Open a port for Japan. As a place to sign the Sick Protection Treaty, this shaman warns that a monument must be erected here to keep the nation's self-centeredness in order not to forget the nation's dismal past.
Ganghwado Island is an area where Koreans can show their self-interest and show their will not to forget the nation's dismal past.

Meaning and influence
Japan-Korea Treaty of the Joseon Dynasty is meaningful in that it can be the first modern treaty with foreign countries. Previously an agreement is contains the request to a big country, but the Japan-Korea Treaty of a treaty, the country to country. In addition, the Joseon Dynasty to the conclusion of the Japan-Korea Treaty of gradually entering the global stage is to have to take open a port policy in Japan was unequal treaty, but to be an occasion. Was the starting point of the colonial aggression. Then again, the treaty became a policy turning point where conflicts between the autocratic and enlightened forces took place.

Internal and external situation after the Korean-Japanese Treaty of 1876
Japan-Korea Treaty of separate action, on the domestic Japanese diplomat's tour in the Joseon Period, opening settings of Japanese residents in the region and Japan.Japanese export and import of products for the exemption and unlimited in grain, and the circulation of money transaction documents, is permitted. This makes it easier for the shipbuilding industry to take protective measures against Japan's economic invasion.

*The signing of treaties with other countries

Japan-Korea Treaty of the Joseon Dynasty, opening up to the Japanese, also opened up to Western countries. The United States, which once failed to open up Joseon's doors by force, once again sought Japan's aid in diplomatic relations with the Joseon Dynasty when it signed a treaty with Japan. Around this time, in response to Russia's southernmost forces, there was also an argument that Joseon's tactics to unite with the United States should be distributed to the local intelligentsia and have diplomatic relations with the United States. In the end, Chung signed the Treaty on the Protectorate of the Joseon Dynasty (1882) on the pretext of keeping Russian and Japanese forces in check and for the opportunity to obtain international final approval for Joseon's sovereignty.
In the first treaty signed by Joseon with several Western countries, the Treaty on the Defence of the Chōshimi, it prescribed that one of the two countries would help each other and make heavy adjustments in the event of pressure from a third country. However, the treaty was also an unequal treaty that stipulated extraterritorial rule and treatment of Choi Hye-guk by a consular court.
Joseon, which signed the treaty with the U.S., also established diplomatic ties with other countries, including Britain, Germany, Russia and France.

*The advance into modern society

Ganghwa Island, Japan and the Joseon Dynasty by opening up to the Western nations, treaties, which first appeared in the international stage. Thus, it prepared an opportunity to develop into a modern society by accepting Western modern ideas and literary institutions. However, the opening of Joseon was forced by the capitalist expansion policy of the Tropics, and the import of modern Western civilization led to the invasion of the powers, including Japan, so Joseon also became the stage for the competition to invade these powers. With the economic invasion of the capitalist powers that followed the opening of the port, and the oppression and exploitation of the aristocratic classes became more severe, people's resistance began to expand day by day.
Therefore, Joseon after the opening of the gate had a national historic task of maintaining independence from foreign invasions, breaking old order and establishing a new order, and establishing a modern national state while protecting the people from double exploitation at home and abroad. Joseon, therefore, pursued reform in all sectors of politics, economy, society, and culture with the aim of establishing a modern state.
However, the modern society of our country was unable to achieve the self-reliant modernization by itself amidst a series of autonomy, batting average, enlightenment, water polo, aggression and resistance, and ultimately suffered the hardship of being ruled by immigrants.

3. UNYOHO incident of 1875
3.1 Historical background
After the Tokugawa shogunate time, Japan achieved modernization through the Meiji Restoration. And Japan wanted to expand its influence abroad as other Western countries did. Accordingly, Japan attempted to negotiate with Joseon, which was geographically close, but failed due to Heungseon Daewongun's policy.

3.2 Cause and result
when Heungseon Daewongun stepped down in 1873, and King Gojong govern, Japan sent Unyoho to Joseon with a plan to open the doors of Joseon even by force. Japan Appear Ganghwa Island, forcing the Korean government to take responsibility for the incident and impose the trade As a result, on February 26, 1876, conclude ‘Ganghwa Island treaties ' , and opened ports to Japan.

3.3 Ganghwa island's geographical role

Ganghwa Island concluded 'Ghanghwa Treaty' . because of un-yo-ho sa-geon.

Ganghwa Island incident, however, by gunboat diplomacy since the signing of 'Ganghwa Treaty' was due to forcibly open the doors and, after the case in Joseon Dynasty. United States and Since 1882 , Joseon has been concluded the treaty of trade with Britain, France, Germany.
1.5 The situation at home and abroad in Joseon Dynasty after Shin Mi-yangyo

Japan Appear Ganghwa Island, forcing the Korean government to take responsibility for the incident and impose the trade As a result, on February 26, 1876, conclude ‘Ganghwa Island treaties ' , and opened ports to Japan.

3.3 Ganghwa island's geographical role

Ganghwa Island concluded 'Ghanghwa Treaty' . because of un-yo-ho sa-geon.

In August 1866, a US merchant ship, the General Sherman, ascended the Daedong River and came to Pyongyang. The United States began to take an active interest in the issue of the opening of Joseon in the wake of the General Sherman case. Following the incident, the United States conducted two rounds of cruise. He also punished the Shermanon case and demanded compensation for the damage, and at the same time, he established two plans for the shipbuilding expedition in order to establish trade relations with Joseon, but failed to put into practice.

Japan Appear Ganghwa Island, forcing the Korean government to take responsibility for the incident and impose the trade As a result, on February 26, 1876, conclude ‘Ganghwa Island treaties ' , and opened ports to Japan.

3.3 Ganghwa island's geographical role

Ganghwa Island concluded 'Ghanghwa Treaty' . because of un-yo-ho sa-geon.
