 Bob 은 주로 나와 이야기하며 자기도 음악을 좋아해서 어려서부터 피아노를 배웠고 지금도 베토벤 소나타들을 즐겨 친다고 한다. 나중에 다시 만나서 같이 연주하자며 John 이 한국어를 배우면서 나한테 많은 도움을 받았다고 고마워했다. 특히 어머니는 아직도 뉴욕에 사시는 90 노령의 부모님한테 John 이 존경어를 쓸 수 있어 기쁘게 해드렸다고 한다. 남편이 이름난 학자이지만 너무 이기적이고 자기를 무시해서 다시 합칠 생각은 전혀 없고 가족이 함께 모여 식사하는 게 25년만이라고 하며 우리 덕분이라고 거듭 감사했다.

 어젠 10인치 넘는 대폭설이 온종일 쏟아져 병원에도 못 가고 하늘만 원망스러웠다. 다행히 회복도 조금씩 보이고 내일 오후에 퇴원해도 좋다고 한다 물리치료사가 일 주일에 두 번씩 집에 오고 외래환자로 계속 치료를 받을 수 있다고 한다. 본인도 회복되려고 열심히 노력하는데 아무래도 시간이 걸릴 것 같다. 수업 끝나고 바로 병원에 가니 영호 타오가 씰라 웨슬리를 데리고 와 있어 내일 퇴원에 관해 여러가지 같이 상의할 수 있었다.

		+	셋째 처남이 어제 돌아가셨다고 연락이 왔다. 지난 달 강남 성모병원에서 심장수술을 받으시고 경과가 좋아 퇴원하려고 옷 갈아입다가 넘어져 뇌출혈로 결국 조용히 눈 감으셨다고 한다.
		+	어려서부터 와이프와 제일 가까운 오빠였고 어서 회복 바란다고 위로 격려해주시던 분이 먼저 세상을 떠나다니 충격도 크고 믿어지지 않는다.
		+	법대 1학년 때 행시 2부를 합격해 광주에서는 천재로 이름을 날렸고 우리 대학 시절에는 재무부에 근무, 밥도 잘 사주시고 영화도 같이 보고 즐거웠던 추억이 너무 많다.
		+	너무 허무한 마음이고 와이프와 울며 웃으며 오빠 이야기를 많이 나누었다.
		+	이제 새로운 세상에서 그토록 존경하던 부모님도 만나고 편안하도록 고인의 명복을 빈다. 장례식에도 참석하지 못 하는 죄스러움과 아쉬움이 더욱 슬프게 한다.

		+	내일 BC 졸업식에서 John Sherman (박성일) 이 최고 논문상을 받는다. LA 에서 가족들이 참석하러 와서 어제 저녁에 벨몬트 센타에 있는 이태리 음식점 Il Casale 에서 우리를 초대했다.
		+	온 가족이 친절하고 화목한 가정처럼 보였는데 칼텍 통계학 교수인 아버지와 남동생, 그리고 한국인 어머니와 어린 여동생이 숙소를 달리해서 부모가 이혼한 줄 알게 되었다.
		+	아버지 Bob은 형이 캐토릭 신부, 한국 서강대학에서 15년 동안 가르쳐서 한국말도 잘 하고 신부가 되려던 자기한테 한국여자를 소개해서 결혼했다고 한다. 어머니는 어려서 부모 따라 미국에 이민와서 대학에서 우주공학을 공부했는데 아이들 셋 기르느라고 전업주부, 결국은 무능하다고 남편한테 무시당하고 이혼했다고 한다.

		+	Susan was sent to MGH imaging center today by her orthopedic doctor for further tests and MRI for the treatment of continuing pain in her lower back.
		+	Two doctors spent almost an hour together to locate the exact spot of the pain, and finally gave her an injection of cortisone under the anesthesia.
		+	Doctors said that she will feel numb next couple of days and hopefully pain will be less and less. I just pray for it.
		+	MGH was an amazing hospital in Boston downtown, so huge, so many patients, and good facilities, etc., and it was my first visit inside even though I used to drop off Youngho there when he was a pediatric resident at MGH.
		+	I wish all goes well, and she is making good progress sooner.
		+	My summer days are too busy to enjoy good weather, however, I still play violin in the Harvard Summer School Orchestra, and the concert is on August 2, Saturday evening in Sanders Theatre.

		+	Dear Hyongnim,
		+	What is the latest word on Susan? Did the cortisone help? Long-term pain like this is so debilitating and psychologically depressing, it must be so hard on her, as well as on you.
		+	I’m afraid I haven’t been keeping up well with outside emails, and must apologize. I am totally focused on my book, which is now written, but requires extensive footnoting, a time-consuming task. I’m now also racing against the clock, as July turns to August, and more and more departmental and university business starts to creep into my emails. Sun Ho recently bought a little rustic cabin (1.3 acres) in New Hampshire, just below the White Mts, where he likes to climb. He’s been going up there every week, often for the whole week, and I’ve been also trying to join him on weekends, if I can. He’s so into mountain life that if I want to see him, I have to go there. It’s very isolated, tucked in the woods, but surrounded by mountains, lakes (ponds), and farmland. Very quiet, rustic, beautiful stars at night. A bit nostalgic for me, as it reminds of Wisconsin, except with mountains!

		+	세월의 흐름이 무의식중에 깊은 강물처럼 흐른다.
		+	긴 겨울이 어떻게 지났는지, 봄은 도대체 왔었는지
		+	여름은 벌써 말복이 다음 주다.
		+	정원에는 짙은 보라색 도라지꽃들이 만발하여 벌써 가을을 재촉한다.
		+	무럭무럭 자라는 웨슬리를 안고 있으면 새 생명의 희망을 피부로 느끼고 이젠 잘 기어 다니고 아래 이빨도 하나 나오기 시작한다.
		+	하지만 아직도 통증으로 고생하고 손주들도 마음대로 볼 수 없는 와이프를 지켜보면 가슴의 고통을 한층 더 날카롭게 한다.

		+	저녁 8시에 하바드 썸머스쿨 오케스트라 (Harvard Summer School Orchestra) concert 가 Sanders Theatre 에서 열렸다. 와이프가 올 수도 없고 기분은 우울했지만 그런대로 즐거운 시간을 가졌다. 지휘자 쥬디가 메모를 보냈다.

		+	카터 에카트 교수가 챨스호텔 내에 있는 Henrietta’s Table 점심에 초대해서 반갑게 만났다. 선호는 오고 싶었는데 아침에 면도하다가 큰 상처가 나서 병원에 갔다고 한다. 늘 위로해주고 격려해주고 한 가족처럼 지낸다. 김선주 교수가 일년간 안식년이라 자기가 한국학연구소장직을 맏게 되었다고 한다.

I think you’re doing all you can do to help, but also remember that you have to take care of yourself if you are going to take care of her, so make sure you keep yourself otherwise occupied in interesting and productive ways.

		+	아침에 김한성 목사가 내일 뉴욕으로 이사한다면서 부인하고 인사하러 왔었다. 김 목사는 뉴욕에 있는 미국 감리교회 본부 지역감리사로 임명되었고 부인은 로체스터 대학에서 가르치게 되어 우선 로체스터로 이사하고 김 목사는 뉴져지에 따로 아파트를 구할 것 같다. 김목사는 하바드 신학대학원애서 공부하고 옌칭도서관에서 거의 7년을 나와 같은 사무실에서 근무하며 나를 도와주었었고 친 동생처럼 가깝게 자냈었는데 막상 헤여지게 되어 무한히 섭섭한 마음이다. 와이프 회복과 우리 가정을 위한 그의 간곡한 기도가 모두 뜨거운 눈물을 흘리게 하였다.

		+	You are very kind to write. We are sorry to hear of Susan's health problems. I am sure with the kind of therapy she is getting, she will have a complete recovery soon, particularly with the two little ones around. Please tell her she will be in our thoughts and prayers. I am glad you are keeping active. As one gets older, It's important to keep mentally alert. Don't quit teaching unless you have to.
		+	We are as well as can be at our age. With the exception of my arthritic left knee which makes walking fast or far rather difficult, I am all right otherwise. I can climb stairs at home without much problem, and I still drive . Our oldest granddaughter graduated from high school this year and will be going to Colby College in a couple of weeks. Her younger sister will follow next year.
