중화전 현판

Definition

‘중화(中和)’는 ‘한쪽으로 치우치지 않는 바른 성정’이라는 뜻으로, 『중용(中庸)』에서 유래한 말이다. 중용에서는 ‘희로애락이 발하지 않은 상태를 중(中)이라고 하고, 발하여 모두 절도에 맞는 것을 화(和)라 한다. 중(中)이란 것은 천하의 큰 근본이고, 화(和)라는 것은 천하의 공통된 도(道)다. 중화를 지극히 하면,천지가 제자리에 위치하고,만물이 잘 길러진다’고 했다.
