- an ontology that enables characterization of the nature or type of citations, both factually and rhetorically.
- 실질적으로도, 은유적으로도, 인용의 성질이나 유형에 대한 특징짓는 것을 가능하게 하는 온톨로지.
- 누군가 특정한 출판물을 인용할 때, 저자들이 인용 링크를 표시하고 그들의 인용 의도를 드러내는 것을 가능하게 함. 특히, 피인용 문헌 자체를 묘사하는 메타데이터와 구별되어 인용문 자체를 묘사하는 메타데이터를 작성할 수 있게 하며, 또 다른 문헌을 참조할 때 저자에게는 동기부여가 된다.

Example
- CiTo는 하나의 문헌이 다른 문헌을 인용할 때 두 문헌에 대해 특정한 인용 기능에 따라서 하나로 연결한다. 이러한 연결을 생성하는 데에 있어서 2가지 다른 접근이 가능하다. 직접적인 접근에서 우리는 CiTo의 프로퍼티를 인용문을 정의하는 문(statements)의 술어로서 이용할 수 있다. 구체적인 접근에서, 그것을 다른 문의 주어/목적어로서 이용하기 위해 우리는 인용문을 cito:Citation 클래스의 적절한 개체로서 정의할 수 있다.
