중국에서 담장을 두를 때는 대부분 벽돌로 쌓는다. 반면 우리나라는 벽돌이 귀해서 벽돌담을 갖추기가 쉽지 않으므로 돌을 가져다가 네모반듯하게 다듬은 뒤, 흙반죽으로 돌의 간격을 두면서 쌓아 올린다. 담이 어깨높이 이상이 되면 기와 조각으로 쌓아 올린다. 이때 기와들 사이에 바르는 진흙은 기와 조각들과 나란하게 하지 않고 ‘요(凹)’ 자 모양으로 조금 오목하게 만든다. 석회와 백토를 개고 반죽을 만들어서 오목한 곳에 흙손질하면 하얀 무늬가 가로세로로 나와 사랑스럽다. 민간에서는 이를 담장 꾸미기라 부르는데, 내구성이 상당히 좋다.<ref>《임원경제지 섬용지》 권1, 〈건물 짓는 제도〉 14, “담장” 3), ‘돌담 쌓기’(《임원경제지 섬용지》 1, 194쪽).</ref><br><br><br>
