우물은 물을 긷기 위하여 땅을 파서 지하수를 괴게 한 곳, 또는 그런 시설을 말한다. 서유구(徐有榘)의 《임원경제지 섬용지(林園經濟志贍用志)》에는 깊은 우물 쌓는 법, 얕은 우물 쌓는 법, 평지 우물 쌓는 법, 기타 우물 파는 법 등과 나무를 가설하여 샘물을 끌어오는 법 및 단정(丹井) 뚫는 법, 우물의 부글거림을 없애는 법 등이 실려있다.
