到連山驛。是日大雨。翟勇謂臣曰。我大唐法令嚴整。少有遲緩。必致罪責。今雖大雨。不可復留。勇之軍吏及臣之從者。俱不欲曰。今日雨大至。水溢洞壑。不可行。勇曰。洞壑潦水。滿而復除。且此驛支給。亦有限量。昨日之留。已爲不可。遂與臣等冒雨過𡊢墟鋪，拆開嶺，山隍鋪。又過大嶺，方門鋪。至雙溪鋪。鋪北有雙溪。溪水漲溢。人皆以衣而涉。經尙田鋪。止宿奉化縣之連山驛。縣距驛東二里。知縣姓名杜安也。驛丞見臣等雨透沾衣。肌寒帶粟。遂煨榾柮於堂前。臣及從者。環坐親炙使自溫。有一人自外至。橫怒肆毒。蹴踏榾柮之火。臣等惴懼奔匿。勇及驛丞。俱被辱焉。勇謂臣曰。外有一人說你是劫賊之人。阻當驛官。不要供給。我與他說汝是讀書君子。他復肆暴。你可寫狀。告他搶去衣包云云。呈于知縣。臣曰。彼人之惡。誠欲可懲。但以不見奪之物。誣爲强奪。伏人非罪。甚悖於理。今足下護我等而來。治他以喝衆侵暴之罪。亦不爲無辭。勇卽寫狀。送于縣官。
연산역(連山驛)에 도착하였습니다.
이 날은 큰비가 내렸습니다.
적용이 신에게 말하기를, “우리 중국의 법령은 엄정해서 조금이라도 더디고 늦어지면 반드시 처벌을 받게 됩니다. 지금 비록 큰비가 내리지만 더 이상 머무를 수 없습니다” 라고 하였습니다.
적용의 군리(軍吏)와 신의 종자들이 모두 가려고 하지 않으면서 말하기를, “오늘은 비가 많이 내려서 물이 계곡에 넘치므로 갈 수 없습니다”라고 하였습니다.
적용이 말하기를, “계곡의 물은 가득 찼다가도 다시 줄어들고 또 이 역에서 지급하는 식량도 한정이 있으니, 어제 머문 것도 이미 안 되는 일이었습니다”라고 하였습니다.
드디어 신 등과 함께 비를 무릅쓰고 책허포(明墟鋪), 탁개령(拆開嶺), 산황포(山隍鋪)를 지나고, 또 대령(大嶺), 방문포(方門鋪)를 지나서 쌍계포(雙溪鋪)에 이르렀습니다.
쌍계포 북쪽에 쌍계(雙溪)가 있는데 시냇물이 불어 넘쳤으므로 사람들이 모두 옷을 입은 채 건넜습니다.
상전포(尙田鋪)를 지나서 봉화현(奉化縣)[1][2][3]의 연산역에서 유숙하였습니다.
현은 역 동쪽으로 2리쯤 떨어져 있었습니다.
지현의 성명은 두안(杜安)이었습니다.
역승(驛丞)은 신 등이 옷이 비에 젖어서 소름이 돋은 것을 보고 건물 앞에서 나무 등걸을 불태워 주었습니다.
신과 종자들은 빙 둘러앉아 불을 쬐어 온기를 취하였습니다.
어떤 사람이 밖에서 들어오더니, 마구 화를 내며 등걸불을 차고 짓밟았습니다.
신 등은 두려워서 달아나 숨었지만, 적용과 역승은 욕을 당하였습니다.
적용이 신에게 말하기를,
“밖에서 어떤 사람이 당신을 해적이라고 말하면서, 역관(驛官)이 지급해 주지 못하도록 방해하였습니다.
내가 그에게 저 분은 글을 읽는 군자라고 말했지만 저 사람은 여전히 횡포한 짓을 거리낌 없이 하고 있습니다.
당신은 저 자가 의복을 빼앗아 갔다는 등의 내용으로 고소장을 써서 지현에게 바치십시오”라고 하였습니다.
신이 말하기를,
“저 사람의 나쁜 짓은 진실로 징계하고 싶지만, 빼앗긴 물건이 없는데도 빼앗겼다고 무고하여 남을 부당한 죄로 덮어씌우는 일은 매우 도리에 어긋납니다. 지금 족하는 우리를 호위해 왔으니 대중을 공갈하고 폭행한 죄로 저 자를 다스린다 해도 말이 안 될 것이 없습니다” 라고 하였습니다.
적용은 곧 고소장을 작성하여 지현에게 보냈습니다.
28th Day. Arrival at Lien-shan Station. This day it rained hard.
Chai Yung said to me, “The laws of China are strict; if there is the slightest delay, it will bring punishment upon us. It is raining hard now, but we cannot stay longer.” Neither Chai Yung's military officers nor my own staff were willing to go. They said, “The rain today is extremely heavy, and the water is overflowing the gorge. We cannot go.” Chai Yung said, “The waters of the gorge are in flood, but they will recede. The supplies of this station, moreover, are limited. Yesterday's [unscheduled] stay has already strained its resources.” With that he went with us into the rain, (past Shan-hsü Stop, Shang-t'ien Stop, and beyond].
We stopped at Lien-shan Station in Feng-hua County. The county seat was two li east of the station, and the County Magistrate was named Tu An.49 The Station Master saw that the rain had soaked through our clothing and that the cold had raised goose flesh on our bodies. He then had stumps kindled in a hollow in front of the main hall, and I and my staff sat in a ring close to the coals to warm ourselves. A man came from outside and, surly and malicious, kicked and trampled on the stump fire. We were frightened and ran for cover. Both Chai Yung and the Station Master were humiliated by him. Chai Yung said to me, “This man, having been told by someone that you were bandits, did not want the station officials to give you supplies. I explained to him that you are a well-read gentleman, but he was still enraged. You may write a deposition saying that he took away your clothes, packages, and so forth, and present it to the County Magistrate.”
I said, “I certainly want the man's wickedness to be punished, but to accuse him falsely of seizing what has not been seized and to bring the man down for something of which he is not guilty, is highly contrary to justice. You, now, have come to protect us; it would not be unreasonable for you to handle the man by accusing him of assault.” Chai Yung then wrote a deposition and sent it to the county officials.
二十八日
