9th Day. At Hang-chou. This day was fair.
The officials who had come the day before and taken the bow and sword came again and said, “Old Grand Defender has kept your bow and sword to look at." I said, “As you command.” Ku Pi came again and said, “A dispatch came from the naval officers setting forth that you were cruising about with fourteen boats, scourging the sea. Now the Regional Inspector16 says that if there were fourteen boats, why were they not seized in the first place and brought in? For that he has brought charges against them. The Grand Defender and the Three Authorities discussed the matter without reaching agreement, but since your deposition explained things clearly, they have adjudged that you are not Japanese. They have made their findings and have commissioned Commander [Chih-hui] Yang Wang to escort you to the capital, from which you will be sent home.
“There was nothing else. You will be here another three or four days. You may put your mind at ease.” Next, His Excellency the Provincial Administration Commissioner Hsü Kuei and Surveillance Vice Commissioner Wei Fu sat together in the guest house of the station and had us brought to them. They said, “We are sending you back to your country; you may be easy in your mind that you will go home all right.” I wrote a poem to thank them and went back from the house.
Li Chieh, a man from Peking, came and saw that my clothes were tattered and my appearance filthy and said to me, “The people here set store by appearances. That is why all who see you laugh in amazement; they take it that all Koreans are like that. You might wash yourself in a sunny place.” I ordered each of my staff to wash his clothes. Chieh said, “There is no harm in that. It is not that you have deliberately hurt yourself, Heaven has hurt you. What does it matter, therefore, that you have been hurt? You need not feel badly about it.' Li Chieh's friend, whose name I have lost, had a copy of a handbook [hsiao-hsüeh] in his sleeve and had Li Chieh present it to me. He wanted a poem. I said, “Accepting someone's gift without merit damages integrity. I make bold to decline it.” Li Chieh said, “This man wants a poem to remember you by.” I said, “I cannot write poems well; I cannot even handle a brush well. I do not want to exchange something not good for something good from him.” The man returned the book to his sleeve and left. Li Chieh said to me, “When the exchange accorded with the Way and the meeting accorded with etiquette, even Confucius accepted something. Why were you so firm in refusing him?” I said, “That man did not want to give away a book, his mind was on getting a poem. Thus the exchange would not have accorded with the Way, and the meeting would not have accorded with etiquette. Once I accepted, it would have been receiving payment for a poem I had sold. That is why I refused him.” Li Chieh agreed and left. In the evening, Li Chieh, his friend Chin T’ai, and two other men came and served me and my staff food.
