정오에 남쪽을 바라보니, 구름이 진(陣)을 치듯 퍼져 있고 어렴풋이 산 모양 같은 것이 보였으며 또 인가에서 불 때는 연기 같은 것이 있었으므로, 유구국의 땅이라 여겨 가서 정박하려고 하였습니다.

조금 후에 동풍이 또 일어나서 배는 다시 서쪽으로 향하였습니다.

밤이 되자 바람이 더욱 거세어져 배는 나는 듯 빠르게 내달렸습니다.

By now, the boat had been pounded by waves for a long time. Three beams, the ridge pole, wind strut, and bow sprit, were shivering and straining to split. Moreover, water was seeping in, and the boat was about to break up. Kūn-bo, Ko-myon, and Sang-ni cut line and bound the boat bow to stern.18 They shaved wood and caulked it. Then they looked at each other and wept. They said, "It is not that we do not put all our will into repairing the boat, but hunger and thirst have afflicted us for almost ten days. Our eyes see nothing, our hands and feet are paralyzed. We can neither nourish our bodies nor fully exert our strength. Though we repair it, therefore, we still cannot make it sound. What are we to do?”
Suddenly a flock of sea gulls flew by. When the men in the boat saw them, they joyfully said, “We have heard that water birds disport at sea by day and roost in islands at night. We have drifted across a vast ocean. Since, such a great distance out, we have the good luck to sight these birds, islands cannot be far.”
I said, “Gulls are not of one kind only. There are some that bob about the islands of rivers and lakes. If they are ocean gulls, the flocks soar with the tides in the vast sea. Usually they only return to their islands when the winds of the Third Month come. Since it is now the First Month, it is just the time when the flocks of gulls are flying in the open ocean.” Before I had finished speaking, we saw several pairs of fishing cormorants fly past. I, too, wondered a little whether islands were perhaps near.
At noon we looked south. There were banks of clouds and, obscurely, the shapes of mountains. There was, too, an atmosphere of human settlement. I felt it was a shore of Ryukyu. We were going to go there and moor when in an instant an east wind again rose strongly, and the boat again headed west. With night, the force of the wind was very strong. We scudded along as if flying.
