復漂大洋中。是日陰。西北風大起。又流入無涯之海。臣及舟人所藏襺衣。俱失於賊。所穿之衣。久漬鹹水。天且恒陰。不得曝乾。凍死之期逼矣。舟載儲粮。盡爲賊奪。餓死之期逼矣。舟以矴艪爲賊所投。假帆爲風所破。但隨風東西。隨潮出入。梢工無所施其力。沈沒之期。亦逼矣。舟人皆塡噎莫能出聲。坐待死期。孝枝謂臣曰。我等之死。分內事也。只以敬差官之死爲痛惜耳。臣曰。爾何以死地爲分內乎。孝枝曰。我州邈在大海中。水路九百餘里。波濤視諸海。尤爲洶暴。貢船商舶。絡繹不絶。漂沒沈溺。十居五六。州人不死於前。則必死於後。故境中男墳最少。閭閻之間。女多三倍於男。爲父母者。生女則必曰。是善孝我者。生男則皆曰。此物非我兒。乃鯨鼉之食也。我等之死。如蜉蝣出沒。雖在平日。亦豈以死於牖下爲心哉。唯朝臣往來。從容待風。舟楫儇牢。故死於風波者。前古所罕。適丁今敬差官之身。天不陰佑。至於不測之地。是以痛哭耳。
다시 바다에서 표류하였습니다.
이 날은 흐리고 서북풍이 크게 일어서 배는 끝이 없는 바다 속으로 흘러 들어갔습니다.
신 및 배에 탄 사람들이 간직했던 솜옷은 모두 해적에게 빼앗겼고, 입은 옷은 바닷물에 절었는데 날씨 또한 계속 흐려서 햇볕에 말리지 못하였으므로 얼어죽을 날이 가까이 왔고, 배에 실은 양식을 해적에게 모두 빼앗겼으니 굶어죽을 날이 닥쳐왔으며, 배는 닻과 노를 도적이 던져버렸고 임시로 만든 돛은 바람에 부서졌으므로, 다만 바람을 따라 동쪽으로 갔다가 서쪽으로 가기도 하고 조수를 따라 나왔다가 들어가기도 하여 사공이 힘을 쓸 수가 없었으니, 침몰될 날 또한 가까이 닥쳐왔습니다.
배에 탄 사람들은 모두 목이 막혀서 소리도 내지 못하고, 앉아서 죽을 날만 기다리고 있었습니다.
효지가 신에게 말하기를, “우리들의 죽음은 분에 맞는 일이지만 경차관의 죽음만은 매우 애석할 뿐입니다” 라고 하였습니다.
신이 말하기를, “너는 어찌 죽는 것을 분에 맞는 일이라 하는가?”라고 하였습니다.
효지가 말하기를 “우리 제주도는 큰 바다 가운데 멀리 떨어져 있어, 수로가 900여 리나 되고 파도는 다른 바다에 비하여 특히 사납습니다. 공선(貢船)과 상선(商船)의 왕래가 잇달아 끊이지 않는데, 표류되고 침몰[1]되는 것이 10에 5-6척은 되어 제주사람은 일찍 빠져죽지 않더라도 나중에는 반드시 빠져죽곤 합니다. 그런 까닭에 경내에는 남자의 무덤이 매우 적고, 마을에는 여자가 많아서 남자보다 3배나 됩니다.[2] 부모가 된 사람이 딸을 낳으면 반드시 이 애는 나에게 효도할 아이다'라고 하고, 아들을 낳으면 모두 '이 물건은 내 자식이 아니고 곧 고래와 거북의 밥이다'라고 합니다. 우리들의 죽음은 하루살이와 같아서 평소에도 어찌 자기 집에서 죽기를 바랄 수 있겠습니까? 오직 조신(朝臣)들이 왕래할 때면 조용히 순풍을 기다리고 선박도 빠르고 견고한 까닭에 풍랑으로 죽은 사람은 예전부터 드물었습니다. 그런데 지금 경차관만을 하늘이 도와주지 않아 죽음의 지경에까지 이르게 되었으니, 이 때문에 통곡할 따름입니다."
13th Day. Adrift Again in the Ocean. This day was cloudy.
A strong northwest wind rose. We drifted again into the limitless sea. The padded clothing packed by me and the boatmen had all been lost to the pirates, and the clothing that we were wearing had been soaked in salt water for a long time. The sky, moreover, was constantly clouded, giving us no chance to dry it out, and the time when we should die of exposure was drawing near. All the rations loaded in the boat had been seized by the pirates, and the time when we should die of starvation was drawing near. Because the anchor and oars had been thrown away by the pirates and the makeshift sail ripped by the wind, the boat simply went east or west with the wind, or in and out with the tide. There was nothing for the helmsman to work at, and the time when we should sink was also drawing near. All the boatmen had stopped-up throats and could not utter sounds. They sat and waited for the time to die. Hyo-ji said to me, “For us, death is part of the job. It is only the death of a commissioner we should lament.”
I said, “Why do you consider death part of your job?” Hyo-ji said, “Our department is far out at sea, more than nine hundred li. The waves are much worse than those of other seas. Of the unbroken lines of tribute and merchant boats that sail out, five or six of every ten are driven out to sea and not heard from again, and the men are drowned. Most of the men of the department die thus sooner or later. The graves of men, therefore, within the borders are extremely few. In the villages there are three times more women than men. When as fathers and mothers the people produce a girl, they say, “This is one who will be good and dutiful to us.' When it is a boy, they all say, 'This thing is not our child, it is food for whales and turtles.' Our lives are as uncertain as the day-fly's. Even if we had continued in our normal way, we should not have expected to die in our own rooms, under our own windows. “Ministers of the Court, however, going and coming, wait at their convenience for the wind. Their boats and oars are nimble and strong. Those who have died in the wind and waves, therefore, have been few in the past. But now this fate has befallen you, honored Commissioner, and, Heaven not rendering its unseen assistance, you have come to this extremely dangerous pass. That is why we mourn for your fate.”
