문재철

Definition

문재철(文在喆, 1883~1955)은 지주, 사업가, 정치인, 교육자다. 일제 강점기 신안 암태도를 비롯하여 전라도와 충청도 일대에 걸쳐 넓은 땅을 소유한 대지주였으며, 해방 이후에는 사업가로 사회운동가로 활동하였으며, 목포부의회의원 등 정계 활동도 하였고, 문태학원을 설립하여 교육활동도 하였다. 1993년 국민훈장 동백장을 추서받기도 했지만, 일제 시기 친일지주적 측면과 민족주의자라는 양면이 공존한다.
