목포 번화로 일본식 가옥-1

목포 번화로 일본식 가옥-1은 1897년 목포 개항 이후 일본인의 자녀가 다니던 소학교 입구 쪽에 자리한 일본식 주택이다. 건축 대장의 등록 연도는 1935년이다. 대마도 출신 상인으로 1897년 개항 이후 목포 일본인 상업 회의소 회장을 지내며 활동한 일본 상인 후쿠다 유조(福田有造)의 집안에서 1920년에 설립하여 운영했던 ‘후쿠다 농업 주식회사(福田農業株式會社)’의 소유였다.

이 건물은 후쿠다 농업 주식회사 직원들의 사택으로 사용한 것으로 추정하고 있다. 도로변에 세워져 안쪽에 마당이 있는 구조이며, 1층인 저층부는 크고 2층은 작은 전형적인 일본식 민가 형태이다. 2층에는 왜돗자리(다다미)방과 일본주택 고유의 붙박이형 가구 구조가 그대로 보존되어 있다.

Japanese Style House of Beonhwa-ro in Mokpo - 1

Japanese Style House of Beonhwa-ro in Mokpo - 1 was built at the entrance to a primary school for Japanese children after Mokpo Port was opened in 1897. The building register listed the house in 1935. It was owned by Fukuda Agricultural Company, which was established in 1920 by the household of Japanese merchant Fukuda Yuzo, who came to Mokpo from Tsushima Island and served as the Chairman of the Mokpo Japanese Commerce Chamber after the opening of Mokpo Port.

The building is presumed to have been used by the employees of the Fukuda Agricultural Company. Situated by the roadside, it is a typical Japanese private house consisting of first and second floors and an inner yard. The second floor features tatami rooms and a Japanese-style built-in furniture structure.
