1909년 10월 29일 개설된 구 한국은행 목포지점이 1911년 2월 조선은행령에 따라 조선은행 목포지점으로 개칭되었가, 이후 1950년 5월 1일 한국은행법이 제정돼 다시 한국은행 목포지점으로 한원되어 오늘에 이르고 있다. <ref> 목포시사편찬위원회, 목포시사, 3권, 2017, 199쪽. </ref>1998년 한국은행 개편안에 따라 폐쇄될 위기에 처하기도 하였다. <ref> 동아일보, 1998. 4. 27. </ref> 현재는 한국은행 목포본부이며, 전국 16개 본부 중 하나다.
