-[[목포경찰서(木浦警察署, 1897~)]] 목포항의 경찰사무를 관장하기 위해 1897년 9월 12일에 무안경무서가 설치되었다. 무안경무서는 목포의 치안 유지를 위해 설치된 경찰 행정의 시초이다. 즉 목포경찰서의 뿌리가 된다. 무안경무서는 서장으로 경무관을 두고 이하에 총순·순검 약간 명이 배치되었다. 당시 무안경무서는 무안감리의 지취 감독을 받았으며, 청사는 처음에는 목포진 남쪽에 있던 한옥을 임시로 사용하다가 그 후 현 죽동으로 신축 이전하였다. 1907년 일본인들이 세운 목포경찰서로 통합되었다.
